Master of Studies in Sustainability Leadership

The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) is an impact-led institute within the University of Cambridge that activates leadership globally to transform economies for people, nature and climate. Since 1988, we have worked with leaders and innovators across business, finance and government to accelerate action for a sustainable future.

The Master of Studies in Sustainability Leadership is a prestigious, part-time Master’s degree offered by the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). Designed for working professionals and senior leaders, the programme develops the strategic, analytical, and leadership capabilities needed to navigate global sustainability challenges and drive transformative change. Delivered through an interdisciplinary approach and backed by Cambridge’s academic excellence, the MSt equips participants to lead effectively on environmental, social, and economic issues while shaping long-term organisational strategy. The programme attracts an exceptional international cohort of mid-career and senior professionals across business, public policy, and civil society who seek to advance sustainability in their spheres of influence.

Core Content

The curriculum blends academic insights with practical business application, drawing on expertise from Cambridge departments such as Engineering, Geography, Land Economy, Zoology, and the Judge Business School. Learners study the changing global context of sustainability, systems transformations, leadership for change, strategic levers for impact, sustainability research approaches, and effective communication and engagement. Teaching is delivered through a combination of residential workshops in Cambridge and structured online modules, supported by applied assignments and an extended research project. The programme emphasises real-world application, peer learning, and critical analysis, enabling students to connect theory with organisational challenges.

Key Skills

Graduates develop a broad and deep understanding of global sustainability challenges, alongside the ability to evaluate and deploy strategic levers for transformation. The programme builds advanced capabilities in sustainability leadership, systems thinking, research analysis, organisational change, stakeholder engagement, and strategic decision-making. Participants cultivate the confidence and leadership presence needed to accelerate sustainability transitions within companies, governments, and the wider economy.

Target Learners

The MSt is designed for senior and mid-career leaders seeking to formalise their expertise in sustainability and drive meaningful change within their organisations or sectors. It is well suited for sustainability directors, corporate strategists, policy professionals, consultants, NGO leaders, and public-sector officials. Applicants often pursue the programme to strengthen their leadership credentials, deepen their understanding of sustainability risks and opportunities, or collaborate more effectively across public and private sectors.

Learning Format

The programme offers two routes: a continuous two-year option requiring steady weekly study, or a flexible route allowing learners to complete the Certificate, Diploma, and Master’s stages over several years (up to a maximum of ten). Teaching is delivered through a blend of online coursework and immersive residential workshops in Cambridge. Continuous-route students attend four week-long workshops, while flexible-route students complete shorter workshops aligned with each stage. Assessment includes individual assignments, a group project, and a major research dissertation or essay.

Additional Benefits

As an accredited University of Cambridge degree, the MSt provides a globally recognised academic credential and access to CISL’s influential professional network. Graduates join a community of sustainability leaders working across industries and continents, supported by CISL’s lifelong learning resources, thought leadership, and global alumni community. The programme enables professionals to enhance their strategic impact, expand their leadership capacity, and contribute meaningfully to global sustainability goals.

Design Thinking for Digital Agriculture

Design Thinking for Digital Agriculture, offered by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign through Coursera, is a beginner-level online course designed to explore how design thinking and human-centered design can be applied to digital agriculture. The course introduces learners to the tools and mindsets used to identify unmet needs, empathize with stakeholders, and co-create user-centered solutions for real-world agricultural challenges. It is intended for educators, students, and professionals working in agtech, policy, research, or education who want to understand how digital tools can be made more useful, equitable, and scalable in agriculture.

Core Content

The curriculum is structured across seven modules and combines design thinking with digital agriculture themes. It begins with human-centered design fundamentals, then moves into digital and precision agriculture, stakeholder needs, ideation, prototyping, scaling, sustainability, and ethical considerations. The course also examines how technologies such as precision agriculture tools and AI are reshaping food systems, while helping learners move from problem framing to solution development and testing. Coursera’s module outline shows a strong emphasis on empathy, stakeholder engagement, and real-world digital agriculture case work.

Key Skills

Participants will develop the ability to apply design thinking and human-centered design to real-world digital agriculture challenges. Coursera lists skills including empathy, design thinking, sustainable development, emerging technologies, human-centered design, user-centered design, solution design, stakeholder management, stakeholder communications, digital transformation, scalability, stakeholder analysis, ideation, ethical standards, innovation, prototyping, and stakeholder engagement. The course also helps learners think more critically about sustainability, usability, and the ethical implications of agricultural technologies.

Target Learners

This course is designed for learners interested in agriculture, design, innovation, and digital transformation. It is particularly relevant for those working in agtech, policy, research, or education who want to design solutions with people rather than simply for them. Because Coursera classifies it as beginner level and states that no prior experience is required, it is suitable for a broad audience seeking an accessible but structured introduction to human-centered innovation in agriculture.

Learning Format

Hosted on Coursera, the course is delivered in a flexible online format with seven modules and an estimated completion time of three weeks at around ten hours per week. The learning experience includes videos, readings, assignments, discussion prompts, and plugins, allowing learners to progress at their own pace while building practical understanding step by step. Coursera also notes that the course includes 27 assignments, offers a shareable certificate, was recently updated in May 2026, and is included with Coursera Plus.

Additional Benefits

The course offers practical value for learners who want to make digital agriculture tools more usable, equitable, and effective in diverse agricultural settings. Its combination of design thinking, stakeholder empathy, sustainability, and ethics gives it broader relevance than a purely technology-focused agriculture course. Because it connects human-centered design with emerging agricultural technologies, it also provides a useful foundation for learners interested in responsible innovation across food systems and agtech.
