Case Study
SA Water at the Australian Water Quality Centre (AWQC)
Two of the most common water quality issues faced by water management companies are elevated levels of geosmin and MIB. These two chemicals, which are naturally occurring compounds with earthy or musty odours, are associated with algae blooms or other microorganisms in water sources. Testing conducted by SA Water at the Australian Water Quality Centre (AWQC) demonstrated that Bygen’s sustainable powdered activated carbon (PAC) product could achieve up to 50% improved removal rates of geosmin and MIB compared to the current market leading coal based PAC. This testing involved spiking of geosmin and MIB into test water at concentration between 130 - 150 ng/L, with PAC dosage rates between 10 and 40 mg/L applied. The contact time and PAC dose rates applied represent typical conditions observed in drinking water treatment. The results from this trial indicated that only 1200 kg of PAC would be required for a WTP flow rate of 10 ML/day with a 7 day PAC dose period. This demonstrates strong benefits for water treatment companies, who can achieve target MIB and geosmin reduction levels with reduced application of PAC in their water quality management systems through using Bygen’s activated carbon products.
Case StudySA PFAS project
Bygen's granular activated carbon (GAC) has been deployed as part of a pilot trial in a wetland system in South Australia. This particular area has struggled with elevated PFAS levels in local water systems due to historical use of PFAS containing chemicals in the local area. In particular, the removal of PFAS contamination through adsorption onto activated carbon has been a key focus. In the 9 months it has been deployed, Bygen's GAC has shown extremely strong adsorption capabilities for the measured PFAS chemicals, with continued retention of the PFAS within the activated carbon over this period of time evident. Total PFAS concentrations within the GAC used in this trial increased from non-detectable levels initially to over 1000 ng/g during sampling at the 8-month stage of the project. In comparison, biochar supplied at the same time only demonstrated an adsorbed total PFAS concentration of 100 - 200 ng/g, which was comparable to native plant species in the area. This study is demonstrating the ability of our GAC to remediate PFAS contamination issues in purpose built containment systems without the need for processing in specialised water treatment vessels and other operations, which offers a wide-range of benefit for landowners dealing with PFAS issues in local water systems.
Case StudyADE Consulting
Ensuring effective removal of PFAS from water sources is a growing challenge for governments and water utility companies around the world. Typically, this challenge when using sorbents not only involves ensuring effective adsorption of PFAS onto the material, but also ensuring that subsequent desorption is limited. Testing conducted by ADE Consulting, which is one of Australia’s leading PFAS testing laboratories, showed that Bygen’s sustainable powdered activated carbon (PAC) and granular activated carbon (GAC) products were able to achieve 99% net removal efficiencies of both long and short-chain PFAS chemicals. Net removal is the total percentage mass that has been removed from the system irreversibly after the sorption/desorption testing. As with percentage sorbed, higher numbers indicate better performance of the tested product. Several of Bygen’s activated carbon products achieved an adsorption percentage of 100% for PFOS, indicating that sorbents effectively captured all PFOS present in the solution. The desorption percentage was 0.0% for the best performing PFAS tailored activated carbon samples. The performance quotient for the samples was 100, reflecting an ideal scenario with no remobilisation of PFOS during desorption testing. Additionally, most of them recorded a net removal percentage of 99% to 100 %, highlighting that nearly all PFOS was removed irreversibly from the system. The results placed these samples at the top end of high-performing sorbents, indicating outstanding efficiency in sorption and minimal desorption, which aligns with the desired characteristics for effective PFOS remediation. Similar results were observed for short-chain PFBS. All the samples exhibited exemplary performance, with an adsorption percentage of 100% and very low desorption percentages of 1.0%. These conditions led to performance quotients of 100, with net removal percentages of 99%. All samples indicated their exceptional efficacy in removing PFBA. This was a very strong result, given the difficulties of adsorbing short-chain PFAS compounds due to the common problem of desorption resulting from interactions inside the porous structure of the carbon. These findings indicated that the tested Bygen activated carbons exhibited strong and irreversible binding of target PFAS under the standardised test conditions, demonstrating their efficacy as PFAS adsorbents. Bygen is continuing to work on tailoring of our PFAS targeted activated carbon products to ensure that this performance is reflected in large-scale applications in future water treatment applications.
