Germany-based ESG data intelligence startup Sunhat has raised €9.2 million (USD $10.8 million) in a Series A funding round, securing fresh capital to accelerate the rollout of its AI-powered platform designed to help companies prove and verify sustainability and regulatory data faster and more accurately. The funding round was led by CommerzVentures, the venture arm of Commerzbank focused on fintech innovation, with participation from existing investors Capnamic, EnBW New Ventures, xdeck, and WEPA Ventures. The company plans to use the proceeds to expand internationally, double its headcount within a year, and extend its technology to cover more than 100 global compliance standards and certifications.

Closing the “Proof Gap” in Corporate Sustainability Reporting

Founded in 2022, Sunhat has positioned itself at the intersection of technology, compliance, and sustainability addressing what it calls the “proof gap” in ESG reporting. While most enterprises collect and manage vast amounts of sustainability and quality data internally, many struggle to demonstrate that information externally to regulators, customers, or investors in a verified, audit-ready format. Sunhat’s “Proof AI” platform bridges this gap by mapping the requirements of leading global standards and frameworks such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, CDP, and CSRD to the information that organizations already maintain within their systems. The solution automatically identifies what constitutes valid and verifiable proof, checks its accuracy, tracks its recency, and alerts users when data or certifications risk becoming outdated. According to the company, this process can dramatically reduce the time, cost, and human workload involved in sustainability disclosures and regulatory compliance, freeing teams to focus on strategic ESG performance rather than administrative verification.

Sunhat’s CEO and co-founder Lukas Vogt believes the ability to validate ESG data quickly and reliably is becoming a key differentiator in global markets. “Enterprises don’t have a sustainability problem; they have a proof problem,” Vogt said. “Companies are meeting standards, building quality systems, and achieving sustainability goals. But when someone asks for proof, finding it and confirming it meets every requirement takes too long. Time-to-proof now decides who wins business and who doesn’t.” The company’s technology, he added, is not only about compliance efficiency but also about turning verification speed into a competitive edge. Lead investor Paul Morgenthaler, Managing Partner at CommerzVentures, underscored this point, noting that many companies lose valuable opportunities because they cannot respond fast enough to ESG and compliance requests. “We backed Sunhat because it turns that pain into an advantage,” Morgenthaler said. “Proof AI knows what proof is needed and has it ready, so teams can respond instantly and confidently. That speed wins business.” The investment reflects growing confidence in automation tools that enhance ESG assurance and data credibility, areas that are becoming central to corporate risk management and investor relations. As ESG regulations tighten across Europe and North America, verification technology is emerging as a critical infrastructure layer in the global sustainability ecosystem.

Scaling for Global Standards and Market Expansion

With its new funding, Sunhat plans to expand tenfold over the next 15 months, targeting 500 enterprise customers across Europe, the UK, and North America. Beyond ESG data validation, the company intends to broaden its platform to include compliance for over 100 global standards, ranging from occupational health and safety to anti-corruption and data privacy. The firm will also add new integration partners, enabling seamless connectivity between its Proof AI engine and the enterprise systems where ESG and compliance data are stored. This interoperability will allow companies to maintain real-time visibility into their sustainability performance and automatically generate verified reports for multiple regulatory and stakeholder audiences.
