The Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals has opened applications for the Registered Practitioner and Principal levels of its Register of Carbon Accountants and Auditors, creating a new professional benchmark for carbon accounting expertise. Developed with the Carbon Accounting Alliance, the register is intended to give companies, regulators and reporting schemes greater confidence in the qualifications and experience of professionals responsible for greenhouse gas calculations and assurance.
The launch comes as carbon accounting becomes more closely tied to mainstream corporate reporting. ISEP said ISSB standards are now being used in more than 40 jurisdictions covering around 60% of global GDP, increasing demand for consistent emissions data and qualified practitioners. The register is designed to address variation in technical experience and professional standards across the rapidly growing carbon accounting market.

The RCAA includes four levels. Technical Associate recognises foundational knowledge, while Registered Practitioner and Principal Carbon Accountant reflect progressively higher levels of technical expertise, responsibility and experience. A separate Registered Carbon Accounting Auditor grade is also planned.
"As organisations look to decarbonise and reduce their environmental footprint, it is essential to have access to independently assessed, high-quality data and advice," said Sarah Mukherjee MBE, CEO of ISEP.
Andrew Griffiths, Co-Founder of the Carbon Accounting Alliance, said: "With all three levels of professional registration for Carbon Accountants fully launched, our industry finally has a robust and transparent approach to formal qualification of credible carbon foot-printing expertise that can give practitioners and users of data confidence in the skills of the individuals undertaking the calculations." The register is intended to strengthen trust in the people behind emissions calculations as carbon data becomes increasingly important to corporate reporting and decarbonisation decisions.
