CarbiCrete Supplies 6,400m² of Cement-Free Paving at Amazon UK Site

Canadian concrete technology company CarbiCrete has supplied approximately 6,400 square metres of cement-free paving for Amazon's new delivery station in Stockton-on-Tees, United Kingdom, marking the first large-scale deployment of its cement-free pavers globally. Announced on 2 November 2026, the project incorporates three CarbiCrete products across parking spaces and pedestrian footpaths. The installation forms part of Amazon's efforts to reduce embodied carbon in construction, with the facility becoming the company's first building to pursue version 1.1 of Living Future's Zero Carbon Certification.

The deployment demonstrates the commercial application of cement-free concrete technology in logistics infrastructure, where large paved areas can contribute significantly to construction-related emissions. Conventional cement production accounts for approximately 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions, according to figures cited by CarbiCrete, with more than 900kg of CO2 generated for every 1,000kg of cement produced. Replacing cement in construction materials therefore presents an opportunity to reduce emissions associated with building projects, particularly when alternatives can meet operational and durability requirements.

CarbiCrete's patented manufacturing process eliminates Portland cement from masonry and hardscape products, replacing it entirely with a steelmaking by-product. The company also uses captured carbon dioxide during the curing process, permanently storing CO2 within the concrete through mineralisation. This approach combines avoiding cement-related emissions with carbon storage in the finished product, reducing embodied carbon compared with conventional cement-based alternatives. The overall emissions benefit of individual installations depends on factors including material sourcing, manufacturing conditions and transportation.

The Stockton-on-Tees facility is pursuing Living Future's Zero Carbon Certification under version 1.1, which places requirements on both construction-related and operational emissions. CarbiCrete's paving forms one component of the facility's wider sustainability measures, rather than representing certification of the building itself. The project shows how alternative construction materials can be incorporated into large commercial developments where embodied carbon reduction is becoming an increasingly important consideration.

Gary Belisle, CEO of CarbiCrete, described the installation as an important milestone for the company's technology and the wider adoption of lower-carbon construction materials. He said, "Projects like these are essential to demonstrating the potential of cement-free concrete as a lower-carbon alternative in large-scale construction." Following the deployment, CarbiCrete is exploring additional applications with Amazon and other potential customers, supported by its expanding manufacturing presence across Canada, Europe, the United States and Australia. Future installations would provide further opportunities to assess the technology's scalability across different construction markets.
