Walmart Invests in Base Power to Expand Home Battery Storage and Energy Savings

Walmart Invests in Base Power to Expand Home Battery Storage and Energy Savings

Walmart has announced a strategic investment in Texas-based energy company Base Power, alongside an agreement to offer residential battery storage and backup electricity solutions through participating Walmart and Sam's Club locations. Announced on 30 October 2026, the partnership aims to help households manage electricity costs, maintain power during outages and support grid reliability. Beginning in November 2026, eligible customers enrolling in Base Power's home battery programme will receive a 20% discount on the company's standard upfront battery installation fee. The financial value of Walmart's investment was not disclosed.

Base Power provides residential battery systems that store electricity and supply backup power during grid outages. Under its business model, the company installs, owns and maintains the batteries, while customers pay an upfront installation fee rather than purchasing the equipment outright. In eligible areas of Texas, Base also offers electricity plans designed to reduce household energy costs. The systems are intended to support both residential energy resilience and broader electricity grid reliability, although actual savings depend on local electricity tariffs, service availability and household circumstances.

The partnership will initially launch in Texas, Base Power's largest market, where the company currently serves more than 35,000 members. Of these, over 20,000 households have installed Base battery systems, while the remaining members receive electricity services from the company. Walmart expects to expand the offering to additional locations and markets over time. Shayne Wahlmeier, Senior Vice President of Walmart Energy, said, "Base Power gives them a practical way to help lower energy costs, have backup power during outages and support a more reliable grid."

Zach Dell, Chief Executive Officer of Base Power, highlighted the companies' shared focus on affordable and reliable household energy services. Founded in 2023, Base Power is developing distributed residential energy storage infrastructure as electricity demand and grid resilience requirements increase. The Walmart partnership provides an additional retail channel for the company's services, potentially expanding access to home battery storage without requiring customers to purchase and maintain the systems themselves. However, the companies have not disclosed deployment targets, additional battery capacity or quantified energy savings associated with the agreement.
