American Airlines and Infinium have marked the first delivery of electro sustainable aviation fuel, or eSAF, to a commercial US airport, fuelling an American flight from Corpus Christi to Dallas Fort Worth. The fuel was produced at Infinium's Pathfinder facility in Corpus Christi, Texas, described as the world's first commercial-scale power-to-liquids eFuels production site, operating since 2023. Infinium says its eSAF can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90 percent compared with conventional petroleum-based jet fuel, and this marks the first delivery of SAF made without biobased feedstocks to a commercial airport in the United States.
Why Non-Biobased Production Changes SAF's Scalability Math
Most sustainable aviation fuel produced to date derives from biobased feedstocks, waste oils, agricultural residues or dedicated energy crops, a pathway that faces an inherent supply ceiling tied to how much suitable biomass and waste feedstock is actually available. Infinium's eSAF instead uses a power-to-liquids process, converting waste carbon dioxide and renewable electricity directly into synthetic fuel, a pathway not constrained by the same feedstock availability limits since it depends primarily on access to captured CO2 and renewable power rather than competing for a finite pool of agricultural or waste biomass.
That distinction matters significantly for SAF's long-term growth trajectory, since aviation currently consumes nearly 100 billion gallons of jet fuel annually while sustainable aviation fuel accounts for less than 1 percent of total global jet fuel use. Closing even a modest share of that gap through biobased feedstocks alone would strain available biomass supply considerably, making a scalable, non-biobased production pathway a meaningful complement rather than a redundant alternative to existing SAF production methods.

The eSAF batch was blended with conventional jet fuel and tested to meet the ASTM International specification for Jet A, the standard governing commercial aviation fuel composition, certifying its use in current aircraft engines and fuelling infrastructure without requiring any modification. That certification step is what distinguishes a genuine drop-in fuel from a fuel that would require new engines, new storage infrastructure or new distribution systems to use, and delivering the blended fuel into the airport's common jet fuel tanks before allocation to the specific flight demonstrates that eSAF can move through existing aviation fuel supply chains exactly as conventional jet fuel does, without requiring dedicated, separate infrastructure.
That compatibility is what makes this flight more than a symbolic demonstration: it shows a genuinely alternative production pathway integrating into the existing aviation fuel system rather than requiring the industry to build entirely parallel infrastructure to accommodate it.
