TotalEnergies has expanded its cooperation with national oil and gas companies PETRONAS in Malaysia, SONANGOL in Angola and Oil India Limited (OIL) to improve methane emissions detection, measurement and reduction. Announced on 1 November 2026 during a meeting of Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) members in Abu Dhabi, the initiatives include developing a regional methane technology evaluation centre, expanding technical cooperation on industrial decarbonisation and conducting additional methane detection surveys in India. The partnerships support the charter's ambition of achieving near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.
In Malaysia, TotalEnergies has signed a collaboration agreement with PETRONAS, the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and JGC Corporation to develop the Southeast Asia Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Center (SEA METEC). Led by PETRONAS, the centre will evaluate technologies for detecting, measuring and monitoring methane emissions across Southeast Asia. TotalEnergies will contribute expertise from its TotalEnergies Anomalies Detection Initiative (TADI) facility in France, which has more than a decade of experience testing methane detection and quantification technologies under controlled industrial conditions.

In Angola, TotalEnergies has signed a memorandum of understanding with SONANGOL to strengthen cooperation on methane emissions management and industrial decarbonisation. The agreement covers emissions monitoring, flaring reduction, energy efficiency, facility electrification and carbon management. The companies will also exchange technical expertise, improve greenhouse gas reporting and explore financing opportunities, including potential support from the World Bank's Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Fund.
In India, TotalEnergies and Oil India Limited are expanding their methane monitoring collaboration following an initial one-month field campaign covering 20 OIL-operated sites in Assam. The first campaign used TotalEnergies' drone-mounted AUSEA technology to detect and quantify methane emissions, providing data to support OIL's environmental reporting. A second month-long campaign will extend monitoring to additional facilities. The AUSEA system uses sensors that measure both methane and carbon dioxide emissions while identifying their sources.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, said, "by sharing technologies, expertise and best practices, we can accelerate concrete action". He linked the partnerships to the OGDC's near-zero upstream methane emissions ambition for 2030. The initiatives aim to strengthen emissions measurement capabilities and help operators identify potential reduction opportunities, although no quantified emissions savings or financial commitments were disclosed.
