Wolters Kluwer has appointed Maria Montenegro as Chief Executive Officer of its Corporate Performance and ESG division, signaling a leadership transition at a time when demand is rising for integrated financial, operational, and sustainability management solutions.
Montenegro steps into the role after four years at Wolters Kluwer, most recently serving as Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer. In that position, she worked across the group on growth strategy, innovation priorities, and technology-driven transformation. Before joining the company, Montenegro spent several years at McKinsey & Company, where she advised multinational clients on portfolio strategy, mergers and acquisitions, and large-scale technology change programs.
Building an Integrated Performance and ESG Platform
Wolters Kluwer established its Corporate Performance and ESG unit in early 2023, consolidating four enterprise software businesses into a single division. The aim was to create a unified platform that supports financial performance management, operational planning, and ESG reporting within one ecosystem.
The division serves corporations and financial institutions seeking to align performance management with increasingly complex sustainability and regulatory requirements. Its solutions are positioned at the intersection of finance, operations, and ESG, reflecting a broader market shift toward integrated data, reporting, and decision-making systems rather than siloed tools.

Leadership Focus on Growth and AI-Enabled Solutions
Stacey Caywood, incoming Chief Executive Officer of Wolters Kluwer, described the Corporate Performance and ESG division as central to the company’s long-term strategy. She noted that the market served by the division is widely recognized for its importance to corporate customers globally and highlighted the growth potential of cloud-based, AI-enabled enterprise software.
According to Caywood, Montenegro’s background in strategy, innovation, and transformation positions her to guide the division through its next phase of global expansion and product development, particularly as demand grows for scalable ESG and performance management solutions.

Transition Following Foundational Phase
Montenegro succeeds Karen Abramson, who has led the Corporate Performance and ESG division since its formation in 2023 and recently announced her decision to leave Wolters Kluwer. Abramson oversaw the initial integration of the division’s businesses and the establishment of its market positioning.
With the division now entering a new stage focused on growth and innovation, Montenegro’s appointment reflects Wolters Kluwer’s intention to deepen the integration of ESG with core performance management, while leveraging cloud and AI capabilities to meet evolving client needs across global markets.
