Watershed Launches Carbon Removal Procurement Program Targeting 1 Megatonne of Credits

Climate software platform Watershed has launched its first Request for Proposals to procure carbon removal credits, seeking up to one megatonne of removals to support the climate commitments of companies using its platform. The initiative is designed to expand the availability of high-quality carbon removal projects for Watershed’s network of more than 500 global corporate customers.

The program introduces a procurement model that aggregates demand from multiple companies, allowing businesses of different sizes to access carbon removal opportunities that are often only available to the largest corporate buyers. Applications for suppliers are open until 31 March.

Integrated Approach to Carbon Removal Procurement

The procurement process is designed to source both nature-based and engineered carbon removal solutions in a single program. This integrated approach reflects the growing recognition that achieving long-term climate targets will require a portfolio of removal technologies rather than relying on a single method.

Nature-based removals include projects such as reforestation and soil carbon management, while engineered solutions involve technologies such as direct air capture, bioenergy with carbon capture and mineralisation.

Watershed’s initiative aims to expand the supply of vetted carbon removal projects available to companies already using its decarbonisation platform, which also provides access to renewable electricity procurement and sustainable aviation fuel purchasing programs.

Aggregated Demand and Market Access

Suppliers selected through the Request for Proposals process will gain access to a structured contracting framework designed to simplify transactions with corporate buyers. Instead of negotiating multiple individual contracts, project developers will connect with an aggregated buyer group through a single procurement process.

This model is intended to reduce administrative complexity while enabling carbon removal developers to reach a broader set of customers. Successful suppliers may also be considered for future procurement rounds and potential multi-year purchase agreements.

For participating companies, the aggregated demand model is designed to reduce costs and simplify procurement while improving access to emerging carbon removal projects.

Expanding Corporate Access to Carbon Removal

Demand for high-quality carbon removal projects has increased rapidly as companies move from emission reduction targets toward long-term net-zero commitments. However, supply remains limited, particularly for projects capable of delivering durable removals at scale.

Watershed’s program aims to help companies secure future supply by creating a marketplace where multiple buyers can collectively support project development and secure long-term access to removal credits.

The initiative is also intended to allow smaller companies to participate in carbon removal markets that have historically been dominated by large corporate buyers.

Growing Role of Carbon Removal in Net Zero Strategies

Carbon removal is increasingly viewed as a necessary component of long-term climate strategies, particularly for sectors where eliminating all emissions is difficult. While emissions reductions remain the priority, many corporate net-zero frameworks now incorporate carbon removal to address residual emissions.

By launching its first carbon removal procurement program, Watershed is positioning its platform as a marketplace connecting corporate demand with emerging carbon removal technologies and projects.

The Request for Proposals represents an early step toward building larger aggregated purchasing models that could help scale the carbon removal market as corporate demand continues to grow.
