Stegra Begins Installing Two Electric Arc Furnaces at Green Steel Plant in Sweden

Swedish green steel developer Stegra has begun installing two electric arc furnaces (EAFs) at its steel manufacturing facility in Boden, Sweden, marking another construction milestone for its hydrogen-based steelmaking project. Announced on 29 October 2026, the installation is central to the company's planned production process, which will combine hydrogen-reduced iron with renewable electricity to manufacture lower-carbon steel.

The electric arc furnaces will melt iron into liquid steel at temperatures exceeding 1,600°C, using powerful electrodes to generate the required heat. The process allows operators to control the chemical composition of molten steel to achieve specific material properties. According to Stegra's steelmaking process, hydrogen-reduced iron will be combined with steel scrap before melting, followed by further refining and casting into steel products.

The furnaces are part of Stegra's integrated manufacturing system, designed to replace conventional coal-based iron reduction with hydrogen produced using renewable electricity. The company completed installation of all 37 electrolyser modules at its Boden hydrogen facility in April 2026, another important component of the planned production process. Together, hydrogen-based iron reduction and electric arc furnace steelmaking are intended to reduce emissions associated with conventional steel production.

Stegra confirmed that further installation work is required before the two furnaces can begin operating. The company has not disclosed a commissioning date, individual furnace capacity or expected emissions reductions specifically associated with the installation milestone. The development nevertheless marks progress in assembling the equipment required for its planned lower-carbon steel production operations.
