Samsonite International has unveiled new science-based climate targets as part of its commitment to sustainability. The company aims to use 100% renewable electricity in all operations and reduce Scope 3 emissions by 52% by 2030, with a focus on increasing recycled materials across its product lines.
Samsonite International, a leader in luggage and travel gear, has announced ambitious climate goals aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company’s commitment includes using 100% renewable electricity across its global operations and significantly reducing emissions through increased recycled material usage in products. The target builds on a 2022 baseline and is under review by SBTi.
With over 95% of Samsonite’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions coming from its value chain, particularly in materials for products, the company has mapped out a reduction plan. This will involve collaboration with suppliers to boost the use of recycled materials, particularly plastics and aluminum, to reduce material-related emissions. By 2030, Samsonite aims to cut Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods by 52% per unit gross profit.
Since launching its sustainability strategy, Our Responsible Journey, in 2020, Samsonite has already achieved milestones in renewable energy use and product recycling. As of 2023, 100% of the company’s own operations are powered by renewable energy, achieved two years ahead of schedule. Additionally, products incorporating recycled materials accounted for 34% of net sales, up from 23% in 2022.
CEO Kyle Gendreau expressed confidence in achieving these targets, emphasizing the company’s focus on sustainable materials without compromising durability. “Our roadmap is built on years of experience with recycled content, and we’re expanding these efforts across our product lines.”
Under the pillars of Product, Planet, and People, Samsonite’s ongoing sustainability efforts aim to reshape the travel industry with a commitment to lasting environmental impact.
