Pure Lithium Wins Australian Patent for Lithium Metal Battery Technology

Pure Lithium Wins Australian Patent for Lithium Metal Battery Technology

Pure Lithium Corporation has been granted an Australian patent, AU2025271196, titled "Lithium metal anode and battery," covering the company's lithium metal anode technology and its integration into a complete lithium metal battery. The patent extends Pure Lithium's portfolio to more than 160 patents and patent applications across multiple jurisdictions.

The company frames the patent within a broader strategic argument about Australia's position in global battery supply chains: Australia mines roughly half the world's lithium but has no domestic battery manufacturing, meaning all batteries used in the country are currently imported. Pure Lithium says its technology, which does not use graphite, cobalt, nickel or manganese, materials the company describes as carrying supply chain vulnerabilities due to being predominantly sourced from or refined in China, could enable a battery supply chain independent of Chinese dominance. The company also points to Australia's vanadium deposits, the cathode material used in its Gen-2 battery design, as a resource that could theoretically support both sides of a domestically produced battery.

Pure Lithium founder, chairman and chief executive Emilie Bodoin said the Australian patent was a significant milestone in the company's global strategy of establishing battery production hubs in key markets, and described the country as possessing the natural resources, technical talent and regulatory environment for lithium metal battery manufacturing.

The company describes its lithium metal anode as offering improvements over conventional graphite anodes in energy density, cycle life and materials cost, and says it believes the technology is suitable for applications including drones, smartphones, electric scooters, grid-scale storage and electric vehicles. These performance and market claims are the company's own characterisation of its technology; no independent technical or commercial verification was cited in the announcement, and no manufacturing facility or production timeline in Australia has been announced alongside this patent grant.
