The Government of New South Wales has announced a $15 million investment to strengthen the state’s renewable energy workforce, with funding jointly provided by the Australian Government over a four-year period. The initiative is designed to support training, apprenticeships, and employment pathways that align with the state’s expanding clean energy infrastructure.
The funding will underpin the Renewable Energy Skills Strategy, a central component of the NSW Energy Roadmap. Officials estimate the plan will support approximately 7,000 jobs during peak construction phases and create around 4,500 long-term operational and maintenance roles across regional communities.
Building a Talent Pipeline for Renewable Infrastructure
As renewable generation, storage, and transmission projects scale across the state, workforce capacity has emerged as a critical enabler. The strategy seeks to establish a continuous pipeline of skilled workers capable of designing, constructing, and maintaining clean energy assets.
Energy and Climate Change Minister Penny Sharpe emphasized that expanding renewable capacity must be matched by workforce growth. The program is structured to connect students, apprentices, and local workers directly to employment opportunities tied to major infrastructure developments.
Training pathways will range from school-based trade exposure programs to formal apprenticeships, traineeships, and longer-term employment streams. The initiative is designed to ensure that workforce preparation keeps pace with infrastructure rollout timelines.
Expanding Participation Across Communities
A significant focus of the strategy is broadening participation in clean energy careers. Targeted measures aim to increase access for women and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, groups historically underrepresented in parts of the energy sector.
Skills Minister Steve Whan highlighted the importance of retaining economic benefits within regional areas. By investing in training that remains anchored in country communities, the government intends to translate large-scale energy projects into durable local employment outcomes.
The program will also expand the Regional Industry Education Partnerships scheme, which connects schools with renewable energy employers. Through structured exposure to industry settings, students gain early insights into career options and required qualifications.
Coordinating Employers and Training Providers
To enhance coordination, new skills coordinator roles will be established. These positions will work across employers, vocational training providers, and local communities to align labour demand with training supply.
Grid infrastructure projects are expected to generate significant employment demand. Transgrid is supporting delivery of the state’s roadmap, including construction of the New South Wales component of EnergyConnect, one of Australia’s largest electricity transmission developments, and the Hunter Transmission Project.
The workforce strategy also builds on existing measures such as fee-free apprenticeships and training initiatives at TAFE NSW, including programs based at the Tighes Hill Campus, home to the Hunter Net Zero Manufacturing Centre of Excellence.

Linking Clean Energy Targets with Local Opportunity
The $15 million commitment reflects a recognition that renewable energy expansion is not solely an infrastructure challenge but also a labour market transformation. By pairing investment in generation and transmission assets with targeted workforce development, New South Wales aims to secure both its climate objectives and regional economic resilience.
Officials maintain that aligning skills development with project deployment will ensure communities share directly in the economic gains of the energy transition, positioning workforce readiness as a core pillar of the state’s clean energy strategy.
