Microsoft has established a new supplier decarbonization team to tackle the increasing carbon emissions from its expanding cloud and AI operations.
The team includes Tim Hopper as Cloud Supply Chain Sustainability Manager, Ray Waweru as Senior Program Manager for Cloud Services Sustainability, and Sofia Khan focusing on Scope 3 Decarbonization.
Hopper, a Microsoft veteran of over 20 years, has been instrumental in responsible sourcing and shaping the company's Cloud Supply Chain strategy. Waweru, who joins from Google, brings experience as a Sustainable Procurement Lead, while Khan, previously at Meta, has a background in net-zero initiatives and sustainability consulting.
In a LinkedIn post, Khan expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "I'm thrilled to collaborate on decarbonizing Scope 3 emissions at Microsoft and to work alongside talented colleagues at a company committed to sustainability and leading in AI."
This team expansion comes as Microsoft grapples with the rising emissions from its growing data center footprint, which has impacted its climate goals. While the company aims to cut Scope 3 emissions by over half by 2030 compared to 2020, its 2023 Scope 3 emissions were more than 30% higher than in 2020 due to increased demand for AI computing power. Scope 3 emissions, which make up over 96% of Microsoft's total emissions, include the "Purchased Goods & Services" category, accounting for more than 36%.
Earlier this year, Microsoft launched an initiative to address its Scope 3 emissions, including a policy requiring some key suppliers to use 100% carbon-free electricity.
In a LinkedIn post, Charlie Sellars, Director of Sustainability for Cloud Operations and Innovation at Microsoft, expressed his pride in the new team members, saying, "Incredibly honored to have these three on my team to tackle those pesky Scope 3.1 'Purchased Goods and Services' carbon emissions from our cloud and AI operations."
