Meta Signs 80 MW Solar Power Purchase Agreement with MN8 Energy for U.S. Data Center Operations

Meta Signs 80 MW Solar Power Purchase Agreement with MN8 Energy for U.S. Data Center Operations

Meta has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement with MN8 Energy for 80 megawatts of electricity from a new solar project in Pennsylvania. The agreement is designed to support the company’s data center operations while contributing additional renewable generation to the regional grid.

Under the terms of the contract, Meta will purchase 100 percent of the electricity generated by MN8’s Walker Solar project, currently under development in Juniata County, Pennsylvania. The facility is expected to begin commercial operations by the end of 2026.

The agreement forms part of Meta’s broader objective to match its operational electricity consumption with 100 percent clean and renewable energy, while working toward a net zero emissions target across its value chain by 2030.

Corporate Clean Energy Procurement Remains Concentrated Among Technology Firms

Meta has remained one of the largest corporate buyers of renewable electricity globally. According to BloombergNEF, the company ranked as the leading corporate clean energy offtaker in 2025, signing more than 10 gigawatts of power purchase agreements during the year. The report noted that Meta, alongside Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, accounted for nearly half of all corporate clean energy procurement activity in 2025.

The concentration of procurement among large technology firms reflects the rapid expansion of data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure, both of which require substantial and reliable electricity supply. As digital workloads increase, long-term renewable contracts have become a central mechanism for managing energy costs and emissions exposure.

Adding New Generation Rather Than Relying on Existing Supply

Meta stated that the agreement supports its strategy of adding new renewable capacity to the grid rather than relying solely on existing generation assets. This approach, often referred to as additionality, is intended to ensure that corporate procurement contributes to incremental clean energy deployment.

Urvi Parekh, Director of Global Energy at Meta, described the partnership as part of the company’s efforts to bring new renewable energy capacity to Pennsylvania and support its clean energy objectives for data center operations.

The Walker Solar project represents the first collaboration between Meta and MN8 Energy, establishing a new supplier relationship within the company’s expanding renewable portfolio.

MN8 Energy’s Role in U.S. Grid-Scale Development

MN8 Energy, headquartered in New York, focuses on decarbonization initiatives, battery storage systems, and grid-scale renewable energy development across multiple U.S. states. The company was founded in 2017 within Goldman Sachs Asset Management under the name Goldman Sachs Renewable Power. It became an independent entity in 2022 and subsequently rebranded as MN8 Energy.

The company’s portfolio includes solar and storage projects structured to support long-term energy supply agreements with corporate and institutional clients. As demand for domestic electricity infrastructure increases, developers such as MN8 are positioning themselves to supply clean power to energy-intensive sectors including digital infrastructure.

Moe Hanifi, Senior Vice President at MN8 Energy, noted that rising data center and artificial intelligence demand underscores the importance of expanding reliable domestic energy infrastructure.

Implications for Data Center Energy Strategy

The agreement highlights the continued reliance of large technology companies on long-term power purchase agreements to secure renewable electricity. By contracting directly with project developers, companies can hedge long-term energy price risk while advancing climate-related commitments.

As artificial intelligence workloads expand and data center capacity grows, renewable procurement is likely to remain a key element of corporate energy strategy. The Meta and MN8 transaction reflects an ongoing trend in which corporate buyers play a central role in financing and enabling new utility-scale renewable projects in the United States.
