ENGIE Launches Largest Solar Facility With 753 MW Project in Brazil

ENGIE Launches Largest Solar Facility With 753 MW Project in Brazil

ENGIE has completed and received regulatory approval for the Assú Sol photovoltaic complex, now its largest operational solar facility globally. Located in the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte, the project adds 753 megawatts of installed capacity to Brazil’s electricity system.

Brazilian authorities granted final approval on 13 February 2026 following construction completion in December 2025. The total investment in the complex reached BRL 3.3 billion.

The facility spans 2,344 hectares and consists of 16 solar plants. It includes more than 1.5 million photovoltaic modules, approximately 12,000 kilometers of cabling and 53 kilometers of internal access roads. The complex is expected to generate enough electricity annually to supply a city of roughly 850,000 residents.

Industrial Scale Delivery and Local Impact

The project was delivered over a 30-month construction period and completed on schedule and within budget. During peak construction, more than 4,500 direct jobs were created, contributing to regional economic activity.

ENGIE incorporated advanced engineering technologies to enhance precision and safety. These included drone-based aerial mapping, automated graders integrated with 3D modeling systems and, for the first time in Brazil, a dedicated automatic pile-driving machine designed specifically for solar installations.

Large-scale renewable projects in emerging markets increasingly require industrial efficiency to manage costs and meet rising grid demand. Assú Sol reflects this shift toward combining scale with operational discipline.

Community Investment and Infrastructure Support

Alongside power generation, ENGIE implemented social initiatives aimed at strengthening local communities in the Assú region. These efforts include the construction of a school and health center, the development of multisport facilities, improvements in water access and the donation of agricultural equipment.

Such community-focused investments are increasingly central to large infrastructure projects, supporting local acceptance and aligning with broader environmental and social governance expectations.

Strengthening ENGIE’s Renewable Footprint in Brazil

Brazil remains a key market within ENGIE’s global renewable portfolio. The company currently operates 15.7 gigawatts of renewable capacity in the country across hydropower, onshore wind and solar assets. It also manages approximately 3,200 kilometers of transmission lines and 22 substations.

Recent developments have expanded this footprint. In December 2025, the Serra do Assuruá wind complex in Bahia reached full operation with 846 megawatts of capacity, becoming ENGIE’s largest onshore wind facility worldwide. The company has also commissioned the first 334-kilometer section of the Asa Branca transmission network, which will ultimately extend more than 1,000 kilometers across multiple Brazilian states. Additional transmission expansion projects remain underway.

Supporting Energy Security and Decarbonization

Brazil’s electricity system is already heavily weighted toward renewable sources, yet rising demand and climate-related variability affecting hydropower output are accelerating investment in wind and solar generation.

Utility-scale projects such as Assú Sol contribute to supply diversification, enhance grid resilience and support national decarbonization objectives. By expanding renewable capacity alongside transmission infrastructure, ENGIE is reinforcing Brazil’s energy security while advancing its broader clean energy strategy.
