Mars Impact Fund Awards $13M Across Six Global Grants

Mars Impact Fund Awards $13M Across Six Global Grants

Mars, Incorporated has committed more than $13 million in new grants through the Mars Impact Fund, spread across six partnerships in Côte d'Ivoire, India, the United States and Thailand. The largest single commitment, $5.6 million, goes to mint-farming communities in India, while a $2.07 million grant to Elucid in Côte d'Ivoire is paired with roughly $2 million in matching funds from Gavi to extend healthcare access to up to 12,750 cocoa-farming households. Two further $3 million grants back youth science programming in the United States and rabies elimination work in Thailand. The announcement, made on September 1, 2026, groups the six partnerships under the Fund's three long-standing priorities: strengthening the resilience of Mars's sourcing communities, building a pipeline of future scientists, and improving the wellbeing of companion animals worldwide.

Sourcing Community Resilience in Cocoa and Mint Farming

The largest share of the new funding targets the agricultural communities that supply Mars's raw materials. In Côte d'Ivoire, the Elucid partnership combines a $2.07 million grant over three years with Gavi's matching contribution to enrol cocoa-farming households in the national health insurance scheme and layer on supplementary coverage for costs the public system does not reach. The same partnership funds upgrades to rural clinic quality and mobile health services, while Gavi's matching funds are earmarked to extend vaccination and disease-prevention coverage to at least 200,000 people in surrounding communities. That model links direct healthcare access for farming households to a broader public-health push, an approach Mars has increasingly favoured over standalone aid grants in its cocoa-growing regions.

In India, the $5.6 million commitment centres on a new partnership with Tanager designed to help 20,000 mint-farming families diversify into potato, mustard and rice production to raise household income beyond a single crop. Two additional planned partnerships, with Pratham Education Foundation and People's Action for National Integration, extend the same regional focus into early childhood education for 3,000 children in Uttar Pradesh and into child nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure for rural schools. Mars frames these investments as complementary to its existing Shubh Mint programme, which the company says has already engaged more than 24,000 farmers and helped more than double their mint incomes while cutting production costs by around 20 percent.

Developing the Next Generation of Scientists and Youth Leaders

A separate $3 million grant to National 4-H Council targets youth career development in the United States rather than farm-level economics. The funding is intended to reach up to 200,000 young people through hands-on programming connected to food, agriculture and veterinary careers, alongside innovation grants for local 4-H chapters and digital career-exploration tools. A smaller but more targeted piece of the grant funds full scholarships for 60 teenagers to attend Ignite by 4-H, an immersive leadership event aimed at building skills and career connections. The scale gap between the 200,000-youth reach and the 60 scholarship slots illustrates a pattern across the Fund's grants: broad digital or programmatic reach paired with a much smaller cohort receiving intensive, resourced support.

Advancing Companion Animal Wellbeing Through Rabies Elimination

The Fund's third pillar receives a $3 million grant to Worldwide Veterinary Service to support Thailand's national rabies elimination effort. The partnership is structured around reaching free-roaming and hard-to-access dog populations that government campaigns typically struggle to cover, strengthening integrated surveillance systems to catch outbreaks earlier, and building long-term veterinary and public-health capacity through WVS's International Training Centre in Chiang Mai. Mars positions the grant as a contribution to Thailand's existing One Health infrastructure rather than a parallel programme, which aligns with the government-led elimination timeline the country has already set. The stated aim is to protect both human and animal populations while leaving a sustained veterinary capacity behind once the grant period ends.

Part of a Wider 2026 Portfolio

Michelle Grogg, Executive Director of the Mars Impact Fund, said the fund aims to build long-term partnerships that deliver sustained impact over time, and that the six new investments are intended to improve farmer livelihoods, expand youth opportunity and improve the health of people and pets in Mars's operating communities. The six grants build on a broader set of 2026 commitments that includes a $1 million grant to World Central Kitchen for earthquake relief in Venezuela, a €1.5 million grant to the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings for early-career researcher fellowships, a $3 million grant to Save the Children for cocoa-community resilience in Indonesia, and a $726,000 grant to Humane World for Animals for veterinary care access in India and Mexico. Taken together, the pattern suggests the Fund is concentrating its cocoa- and mint-sourcing grants in the same geographies where Mars sources raw materials, while its scientist-pipeline and animal-welfare grants operate on a more global basis independent of direct supply-chain overlap.

What to Watch

The near-term test for these grants will be delivery against the specific household and beneficiary targets Mars has attached to each one, including the 12,750 cocoa-farming households in Côte d'Ivoire, the 20,000 mint-farming families in India and the 200,000 community members covered by Gavi's matching vaccination funds. Because several of the India partnerships, including those with Pratham and PANI, are described as planned rather than finalised, the terms and timelines of those agreements are worth monitoring as they are confirmed. It will also be worth watching whether the health-insurance and matching-fund model used with Elucid and Gavi in Côte d'Ivoire is replicated in other Mars sourcing regions, given the company's stated preference for pairing philanthropic grants with existing public systems rather than building parallel ones.
