Kvasir Technologies Raises €10 Million Series A to Scale Climate-Neutral Marine Biofuel

Kvasir Technologies Raises €10 Million Series A to Scale Climate-Neutral Marine Biofuel

Kvasir Technologies, a Copenhagen-based biofuel startup and spin-out from the Technical University of Denmark, has raised €10 million in a Series A round with European Energy participating as a new investor alongside existing backers EIFO, Mærsk Growth and Footprint Fund, to accelerate scale-up and commercialisation of its climate-neutral marine fuel. Simultaneously, the company has entered into a strategic partnership with European Energy by establishing KVEEN Biofuels, a joint venture working toward the construction of a commercial-scale plant to produce biofuels using Kvasir's patented solvothermal liquefaction technology. The capital will fund scaling at Kvasir's test facility in Fredericia, which can produce up to 2 tonnes of biofuel per day, while development work begins on the first commercial plant in Aabenraa in southern Jutland.

The Solvothermal Liquefaction Technology and Its Marine Fuel Advantages

Kvasir Technologies has developed a single-step solvothermal liquefaction process that converts a wide range of non-edible lignin-based residues from agriculture and forestry into refined biofuels for shipping, with the company claiming it is the only process capable of fully converting lignocellulosic biomass, the earth's most abundantly available biomass waste material, into next-generation marine biofuel. The process retains more than 80 percent of the combustible energy originally contained in the biomass in the resulting biooil, and because the feedstock is agnostic it can accept diverse lignocellulosic inputs, making it scalable enough to theoretically cover global marine fuel demand four times over. The technology offers the possibility of more than 100 percent carbon dioxide reduction due to carbon sequestration in biochar produced as a co-product of the conversion process, which represents a potentially significant carbon accounting advantage over competing biofuel pathways.

The marine fuel application is particularly commercially attractive because Kvasir's biooil is miscible with fossil fuel oil and can be blended with existing marine fuel, requiring no modification to ship engines or changes to existing bunkering infrastructure. This drop-in compatibility provides immediate market access without the capital investment or operational disruption that alternative marine fuel technologies require, allowing shipping companies to begin reducing emissions progressively as Kvasir's biofuel becomes available at commercial scale. Joachim Bachmann Nielsen, Chief Executive Officer of Kvasir Technologies, said the investment round enables the company to take the next crucial steps in developing and scaling the technology while underscoring continued strong support for solutions that can deliver real climate impact in the maritime sector.

The European Energy Partnership and Commercial Plant Development

The establishment of KVEEN Biofuels as a joint venture between Kvasir Technologies and European Energy combines Kvasir's patented conversion technology with European Energy's proven experience in developing and financing energy infrastructure at scale. Ulrik Falkenberg Lending, Chief Commercial Officer of Kvasir Technologies, said the European Energy partnership reduces the risk of the first commercial plant and accelerates the route to market, identifying the partner's infrastructure development and financing track record as the primary value added to the commercialisation pathway. Knud Erik Andersen, Chief Executive Officer of European Energy, said what will be decisive for Kvasir's technology is achieving attractive price points through innovation and scaling to secure long-term offtake agreements before construction begins, and that European Energy looks forward to applying its relevant experience to this process.

The strategic logic of combining a technology developer with an energy infrastructure developer in a dedicated joint venture addresses the two primary challenges facing biofuel startups at the commercial scale-up stage: technology risk and project finance risk. By separating the technology validation function at the Fredericia test facility from the commercial plant development function through KVEEN Biofuels, the two companies can pursue parallel workstreams that accelerate the overall timeline from laboratory-proven technology to commercial production without requiring Kvasir to develop energy project development capabilities that are outside its core competence. The Mærsk Growth participation as an existing investor provides a commercial maritime sector connection that could facilitate early offtake relationship development as the Aabenraa commercial plant moves toward construction.

Outlook for Lignocellulosic Marine Biofuel

The Kvasir Technologies Series A arrives at a moment when the maritime shipping industry faces intensifying regulatory pressure to decarbonise under the International Maritime Organization's revised greenhouse gas strategy, which sets ambitions for net-zero shipping by around 2050, and European Union regulations including the FuelEU Maritime framework that mandate progressively lower lifecycle greenhouse gas intensity for marine fuels used in EU ports. Drop-in biofuels that require no vessel modification and can be blended with existing fuel infrastructure represent the lowest-friction pathway to immediate emissions reductions for shipping operators, making the commercial development of Kvasir's lignocellulosic marine biofuel strategically well-timed relative to these regulatory developments. Whether Kvasir and European Energy can achieve the price competitiveness needed to secure long-term offtake agreements before the Aabenraa commercial plant begins construction will be the decisive commercial test that Andersen himself identified.

Sustained progress on technology scaling at Fredericia combined with successful KVEEN Biofuels plant development would establish Kvasir as a meaningful contributor to marine biofuel supply and demonstrate that solvothermal liquefaction can deliver commercial-scale lignocellulosic biofuel production at competitive economics. The convergence of FuelEU Maritime regulatory demand, Mærsk Group supply chain decarbonisation commitments and the abundance of lignocellulosic agricultural and forestry residue feedstocks across Northern Europe creates structurally favourable conditions for Kvasir's technology to find its commercial market if the scale-up programme delivers on its efficiency and cost projections.
