IATA Unveils Integrated Sustainability Program to Elevate ESG Standards Across Global Aviation

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched the Integrated Sustainability Program (ISP), a landmark initiative designed to embed environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles across the aviation industry. Announced at the IATA World Sustainability Symposium (WSS) in Hong Kong, the new certification program provides airlines with a unified sustainability management and assessment framework aimed at driving measurable impact and transparency.

A Comprehensive Sustainability Framework for Airlines

Built on the foundation of IATA’s successful Environmental Assessment Program (IEnvA), the ISP introduces an expanded, modular approach that covers four key dimensions: Environmental Management, Sustainable Procurement, Social Responsibility, and Sustainability Performance. The program combines certification with training, consulting, assessment, and practical implementation tools to help airlines integrate sustainability into every layer of their operations. Airlines can pursue modules individually or as part of a fully integrated certification cycle, subject to independent reviews every two years. According to Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Sustainability and Chief Economist, the ISP marks a major step forward in how airlines approach ESG management.

“The comprehensive ISP certification program validates that an airline is managing its sustainability efforts at the highest level and in the broadest context. It provides transparency to regulators, investors, and customers, while ensuring efforts are aligned with global best practices,” she said.

Four Modules Driving Aviation’s ESG Evolution

  • Environmental Management: At the heart of the ISP, IEnvA now serves as the environmental module, integrating ISO14001:2015 principles to help airlines systematically assess and manage their environmental footprint. Certified airlines develop tailored management plans for carbon emissions, waste, water, noise, biodiversity, and pollution, ensuring compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Sustainable Procurement: For the first time in aviation, the ISP aligns procurement standards with ISO20400:2017, enabling airlines to evaluate and improve the sustainability of their supply chains. This includes assessing suppliers across environmental and social criteria such as ethical sourcing, fair labor, and lifecycle emissions enhancing accountability across procurement decisions.
  • Social Responsibility: The ISP incorporates global human rights and corporate responsibility frameworks, including ISO26000:2010, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and OECD guidelines. Airlines are guided to implement human rights due diligence, strengthen community engagement, and elevate customer protection and service standards.
  • Sustainability Performance: This final module helps airlines measure and monitor performance across ESG pillars, establishing data-driven reporting aligned with the EU CSRD, IFRS S2, and evolving investor disclosure requirements. By tracking metrics in real time, airlines can benchmark progress, inform decision-making, and communicate results to stakeholders transparently.

Industry Leaders Take Flight: Air New Zealand and EVA Air Lead as First Movers

At the Hong Kong symposium, Air New Zealand and EVA Air were announced as the first carriers to earn ISP certification in the Sustainable Procurement module—setting a precedent for industry peers. Kiri Hannifin, Air New Zealand’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, described the certification as a business and moral imperative.

“Sustainable procurement means building on the strength and innovation of our supplier network to create better outcomes for people and the planet,” she said. “By backing IATA’s ISP, we aim to lift standards across aviation and show that doing what’s right is also good business.”

Jason Liu, Chief Sustainability Officer at EVA Air, echoed that sentiment:

“Earning this certification marks a key milestone in EVA Air’s sustainability journey, reflecting our commitment to integrating ESG values into procurement and building a more resilient, responsible supply chain.”

Scaling Up: The Future of ISP Beyond Airlines

While currently available only to airlines, IATA confirmed that the Integrated Sustainability Program will expand over time to include airports, ground handlers, cargo operations, maintenance providers, and catering companies. This broader roll-out aims to align the entire aviation value chain with the same ESG standards, ensuring that sustainability performance is consistent from gate to sky. The association also plans to work with industry partners to refine certification criteria and ensure that ISP remains practical, data-driven, and globally applicable, evolving alongside technological and regulatory developments.

Setting a New Global Benchmark for Aviation Sustainability

The launch of the ISP represents more than a new certification system, it’s a signal of how seriously the aviation industry is taking its transition toward sustainability. With airlines under increasing scrutiny from regulators, investors, and passengers, the ISP offers a standardized, verifiable framework for progress. As IATA integrates environmental performance with social responsibility and governance metrics, the program aims to turn sustainability from a reporting exercise into an operational cornerstone, one that can guide aviation toward a resilient, net-zero future.
