CREW Carbon Signs Microsoft Offtake for 23,602 Wastewater Carbon Removal Credits

CREW Carbon has signed an offtake agreement with Microsoft for up to 23,602 durable, verified carbon removal units generated through the company's patented wastewater alkalinity enhancement technology. The agreement extends CREW's existing offtake relationships with corporate carbon buyers including JPMorgan, Google, Autodesk and Stripe, several secured through Frontier, bringing the company's total committed carbon removal value to more than $40 million.

 

How Wastewater Treatment Becomes a Carbon Removal Pathway

 

CREW's technology works by adding strategically sourced alkaline minerals, such as calcium carbonate, into wastewater treatment plants to optimise conditions including pH and alkalinity, changes that both improve the plant's biological treatment performance and permanently lock away carbon dioxide in a measurable, durable form. The company describes this as the world's first and only verified carbon removal pathway from wastewater alkalinity enhancement, a technology developed at and backed by Yale University.

That dual function, improving treatment outcomes while simultaneously removing carbon, distinguishes this approach from many carbon removal technologies that operate as a standalone process disconnected from any other operational benefit. Because the technology also improves biological performance and settleability while reducing chemical usage at the treatment plant, it offers wastewater utilities an operational incentive to adopt it beyond the carbon credit revenue alone, a structure that could meaningfully lower the adoption barrier compared with carbon removal technologies requiring plant operators to bear costs with no offsetting operational benefit.
