Ameresco Sunel to Build 58MWp Solar Project in Romania, Offsetting 53,920 Tons of CO2

Ameresco Sunel Energy SA, a joint venture between Ameresco and SUNEL Group, will provide engineering, procurement, construction and long-term operations and maintenance services for a new 58 megawatt-peak solar photovoltaic facility in Iratosu, Arad County, Romania. The project, owned and developed by UK-registered TDI Renewables, is expected to offset approximately 53,920 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. The facility will include a 33kV/110kV substation and underground cable works connecting it to the grid, supporting reliable integration of the new generation capacity into Romania's energy system.

The ground-mounted plant is designed with an installed capacity of 48 megawatts AC and 58 megawatts peak, and Ameresco Sunel will manage the project across its full lifecycle, from design and procurement through construction, commissioning and ongoing operations. The project extends the joint venture's growing footprint in Romania, building on a previously announced set of solar parks totalling 466 megawatts-peak in the southwestern part of the country.

Together, these projects support Romania's broader transition away from coal-fired power generation, part of the country's stated commitment to phase out coal entirely by 2032. Expanding domestic renewable generation capacity of this kind is positioned as strengthening Romania's energy security while contributing to both national and wider European net-zero commitments.

Pete Christakis, chief operating officer of Ameresco, said the project marked another milestone in the company's expanding presence in Romania, reinforcing its role in the broader build-out of renewable energy infrastructure across Central and Eastern Europe. Konstantinos Zygouras, vice president at Ameresco Sunel Energy SA, said the project's significance lies not only in its scale but in how it fits into the broader energy picture for Arad County and the surrounding communities, describing it as building toward a more secure and resilient energy future for Romania.
