UNDP’s AI Champion Una Boosts Pacific Green Energy Push

UNDP’s AI Champion Una Boosts Pacific Green Energy Push

On May 19, 2025, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Asia and the Pacific unveiled Una, the world’s first AI-powered Environment Champion, in Bangkok, Thailand. Una is set to spotlight the Pacific Green Transformation Project, a $37.5 million initiative launched in 2023 with Japan’s backing to bring clean energy to Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Timor-Leste, and Vanuatu. By blending AI with storytelling, Una aims to inspire communities and governments to embrace renewable energy and climate resilience. Here’s how it’s unfolding and why it matters.

What’s Una All About?

Una, an AI character, will share stories of the Pacific Green Transformation Project through videos, live chats, and holographic appearances. The project tackles energy poverty in Pacific Island nations, where, for example, 71% of Vanuatu’s 280,000 people lack electricity, and Papua New Guinea aims to electrify 70% of its population by 2030. Una’s mission, as she says, is to “bring Pacific Island voices to the world, inspiring people to tap into renewable energy”. Think short documentaries on social media, interactive websites, and Una popping up at global events to push for sustainable choices.

The project itself is practical and ambitious:

  • Papua New Guinea: Building micro solar farms, like a 1 MW plant in Bougainville, and supporting micro-grid regulations.
  • Samoa: Rolling out 53 electric vehicles, setting up EV charging stations, and crafting prosumer regulations.
  • Timor-Leste: Solarizing health centers, schools, and 1,000 off-grid households, plus renewable energy laws.
  • Vanuatu: Installing pico-hydro stations on Pentecost Island to power 700 households, aiming for 100% renewable energy by 2030.

Funded by Japan’s $37.5 million, the project also aligns with these nations’ Paris Agreement goals, cutting fossil fuel reliance and boosting climate resilience.

Why It’s a Big Deal

Pacific Islands face brutal climate challenges—rising seas, storms, and heat—despite emitting just 0.03% of global CO2, per UN data. Energy access is abysmal; 10 million Pacific Islanders lack clean cooking, and oil imports eat up to 15% of GDP in places like Fiji. Una’s AI-driven campaign could change the game by:

  • Amplifying Voices: Sharing stories of remote communities, like Vanuatu’s off-grid villages, to global audiences.
  • Driving Action: Encouraging locals and leaders to adopt solar, wind, and EVs through workshops and videos.
  • Innovating Outreach: Using AI to make climate talks engaging, not preachy, with 83% of global youth wanting bold climate action, per a 2024 UNICEF poll.
Kanni Wignaraja, UNDP’s Asia-Pacific chief, called Una a “groundbreaking advancement” for sparking climate conversations.

The Catch

AI’s cool, but it’s not a cure-all. Una’s success hinges on execution—those videos and holograms need to resonate, not feel gimmicky. The project’s scale is modest; $37.5 million split across four countries won’t fully electrify them. Papua New Guinea’s 1 MW solar farm, for instance, is a drop in the bucket for its 10 million people. Plus, Pacific nations face hurdles like weak infrastructure and high capital costs.

What’s Next?

Una’s campaign kicks off with social media videos tracing her Pacific journey, plus holographic appearances at events like the 2025 UN Climate Conference. The project’s pushing hard through 2025, with workshops like December 2024’s Singapore session on renewable energy integration. Long-term, UNDP wants to scale up private investment in Pacific renewables, drawing on Japan’s $60 billion climate finance pledge. If Una can rally communities and investors, she could help these islands leapfrog fossil fuels and show the world how small nations tackle big climate fights.
