World Sindhi Congress Protests Illegal Canals on Indus River at UNHRC Session

The World Sindhi Congress protested at the UNHRC session in Geneva, condemning illegal canals on the Indus River and human rights abuses in Sindh, calling for urgent international intervention.

Demonstrators Urge International Intervention Over Humanitarian Crisis in Sindh

Geneva, Switzerland – March 20: The World Sindhi Congress (WSC) staged a massive protest during the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, highlighting concerns over the construction of illegal canals along the Indus River and the worsening humanitarian crisis in Pakistan’s Sindh region.

The demonstrators, primarily Sindhi activists, condemned the unauthorized water projects, which they claim are devastating the agriculture and ecosystem of the region.

Protesters Denounce Water Crisis and Human Rights Abuses

One protester declared:

"They want to take the last drop of water so that Sindhi people die. Children and women farmers all have risen against the atrocities of Pakistan. Sindh is in a struggle for survival."

Protesters also linked the water crisis to broader human rights abuses, including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and the persecution of Sindhi Hindus. Some demonstrators described the situation as genocide, drawing parallels with past atrocities in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Bangladesh.

Another protester added:

"Pakistan is bombarding civilian areas in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They are abducting thousands of people. Millions have been killed in this ongoing genocide."

Sindhi People Demand International Action

Holding placards reading “No Canal on Indus River,” “Sindhi Lives Matter,” and “No Illegal Canals on River Indus,” protesters stressed that the unauthorized canals are draining vital water resources, worsening food and medical shortages in Sindh.

The protest concluded with a strong appeal to the international community to intervene and address the environmental and humanitarian crisis facing the Sindhi people.
