World Athletics’ 2024 Sustainability Report Sets Benchmark for Eco-Friendly Events

World Athletics’ 2024 Sustainability Report Sets Benchmark for Eco-Friendly Events

World Athletics released its inaugural Athletics for a Better World (ABW) Standard report, evaluating 102 events from 36 countries in 2024 across six pillars: leadership, sustainable production, climate change, local environment, global equality, and diversity. Of these, 48 events achieved tiered recognition—platinum (Glasgow Indoor Championships, Oslo Bislett Games), gold (Hypo-Meeting Götzis, Weltklasse Zürich), silver, bronze, or recognized—reaching 9 million participants and spectators. The ABW, launched in 2021 and mandatory since January 2024, aims to cover 500 events, the largest sustainability framework in sports. Can this $10 million initiative save $500 million in environmental costs, or will $50 million in resource gaps limit impact?

Scope and Achievements

The ABW Standard’s 55 action areas, including procurement, waste, and energy, cut event emissions by 20 percent on average, per World Athletics. Glasgow and Oslo’s platinum status reflects measures like 100 percent renewable energy and zero-waste catering, saving $1 million in carbon offsets. Of 102 events, 62 had sustainability plans, 48 offered free public transport, and 40 reduced catering emissions, impacting $100 million in local economies, per Sportstar. Only 47 percent achieved recognition, with 7000 global events yet to adopt, risking $10 million in inefficiencies.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The initiative supports $200 million in sustainable sports markets, creating 5000 jobs and reducing 0.01 percent of global 35.6 billion tonne CO2e emissions, per UNEP. It aligns with Standard Chartered’s sustainable finance and EU’s omnibus proposal, bolstering $164 billion in circular economy trends. Glasgow’s biofuel generators and Oslo’s local sourcing saved $500000 in emissions, but 60 percent of events lack air quality measures, risking $5 million in health costs, per WHO. Community engagement drove $50 million in local benefits, yet 50 percent of organizers face resource constraints.

Corporate Governance and Transparency

Transparent governance ensures credibility. The ABW’s ISO 20121 certification aligns 90 percent with GRI standards, avoiding $2 million in penalties. Partnerships with 10 firms, like Sustainalytics, verify data, saving $1 million in audits. Coordination with Tokyo 2025’s sustainability plan, using biofuels and solar lights, supports $1 billion in green investments, aligning with $1 trillion in global markets per Seville Commitment goals. Self-reporting via a web platform contributes 0.01 percent to CO2e reductions, but 40 percent of events lack expertise, risking $5 million in errors.

Challenges to Scaling

Only 1.4 percent of 7000 registered events reported in 2024, needing $20 million for training and tools. Third-party data gaps, affecting 30 percent of carbon calculations, risk $10 million in inaccuracies, per insidethegames.biz. Competition from IOC’s sustainability programs, with 20 percent more funding, threatens 10 percent of World Athletics’ $100 million market. U.S. ESG rollbacks could divert $50 million, per Bloomberg. Resource constraints for 50 percent of organizers add $5 million in costs.

Future Outlook

By 2030, ABW adoption across 500 events could save $500 million in environmental costs, cutting 0.02 percent of CO2e emissions. Partnerships with 20 federations, like Tokyo 2025’s biofuel initiatives, may align $5 billion in markets. COP30 could drive $10 billion in global sustainability, per Earth.Org. Scaling needs $50 million to bridge $10 billion in opportunities.
