What SAP's AI Sustainability Whitepaper Says About Net Zero

What SAP's AI Sustainability Whitepaper Says About Net Zero

Enterprise software leader SAP has outlined how artificial intelligence can support credible net-zero strategies in its newly released whitepaper, AI and Sustainability at SAP. The report positions AI as both a climate solution and a responsibility, arguing that digital transformation must be designed to operate within planetary boundaries.

The paper builds on projections from the World Economic Forum, which estimates that AI could help cut global carbon emissions by three to six gigatonnes of CO₂e annually by 2035. SAP’s contribution focuses on how AI can be deployed responsibly across enterprise systems while ensuring that AI itself does not become a growing source of emissions.

Designing AI for Energy Efficiency

A central theme of the whitepaper is reducing the environmental footprint of AI workloads. SAP highlights that AI systems are often energy-intensive and require deliberate optimisation to avoid undermining sustainability goals. The company says all AI assets and AI-related processes under its direct control are engineered to minimise energy consumption, embedding sustainability-by-design into its platforms.

The report emphasises continuous monitoring and granular measurement of AI-related emissions. As compute infrastructure scales and costs decline, SAP argues that proactive emissions management will be critical to ensure efficiency gains translate into real-world carbon reductions.

Responsible Governance and Ethics

Beyond energy use, SAP frames governance as a core pillar of sustainable AI. The company has introduced a Global AI Ethics Policy that governs how AI systems are developed, deployed, used and commercialised across its technology stack. The policy is intended to ensure that social and ethical considerations are integrated from the outset, reducing risks linked to bias, misuse or unintended societal impacts.

According to Matthias Medert, Global Head of Sustainability at SAP, AI must scale responsibly as its influence grows. He notes that SAP is working closely with partners to ensure responsible AI data supply chains, covering how models are sourced, trained and deployed with sustainability and ethics at the core.

Turning Sustainability Into Business Value

The whitepaper also details how SAP’s Business AI tools can help companies move from sustainability reporting to operational decision-making. AI-driven automation enables CFOs and CSOs to generate sustainability reports significantly faster by streamlining data aggregation, analysis and narrative development. For COOs, AI optimisation supports supply chain efficiency through improved demand forecasting and reduced waste across production and logistics.

Dominik Asam, Chief Financial Officer at SAP, highlights the importance of integrating carbon and financial data. He points to SAP’s Green Ledger concept, which treats emissions data with the same discipline as financial accounting, allowing companies to automate compliance, improve data quality and identify the most effective decarbonisation investments.

AI as a Net-Zero Enabler

Overall, SAP’s whitepaper presents AI as a practical enabler of net-zero strategies when deployed with efficiency, transparency and strong governance. The company argues that responsible AI can help enterprises reduce emissions, improve compliance across global regulations and embed sustainability into core business operations, provided that AI systems themselves are managed as part of the climate challenge rather than outside it.
