Tata Motors launches zero-emission electric buses at its Pantnagar plant, saving 1,100 tonnes of CO2 annually. The initiative drives workforce mobility while advancing sustainability goals
Tata Motors, a leader in India’s automotive industry, has launched a fleet of zero-emission electric buses at its Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand. These buses are designed to transport over 5,000 employees while supporting the company’s ambitious sustainability goals.
A Step Toward Sustainable Mobility
The fully electric buses, equipped with advanced battery systems, regenerative braking, and intelligent transport systems, are part of Tata Motors' commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2045. They represent a crucial milestone in the company’s journey toward clean energy solutions in the transport sector.
Charging these buses will be powered by a 16 MW solar power plant, further enhancing their eco-friendly credentials. This initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1,100 tonnes annually.
A Green Manufacturing Initiative
Speaking on the launch, Vishal Badshah, Vice President and Head – Operations, Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, remarked:
“The introduction of electric buses for workforce commuting marks a significant step forward towards fulfilling Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles’ aspiration of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2045. We are committed to making all our manufacturing facilities green by integrating sustainability across their entire value chain – from sourcing to development and engineering to operations.”
"I am delighted to launch this initiative in Pantnagar first as it adds to and acknowledges the successes of the facility’s myriad of sustainability initiatives. This plant is already a certified Zero Waste to Landfill facility and has also received water-positive certification by CII-GBC. The launch of a zero emission, e-fleet service creates another major milestone in the sustainability journey of the plant."
He also highlighted that the Pantnagar plant, already certified as a “Zero Waste to Landfill” and water-positive facility, has become a benchmark for sustainable manufacturing in India.
Strengthening India’s E-Transport Ecosystem
Tata Motors is a pioneer in India’s electric bus market, with over 3,100 e-buses operating across 10 cities. These buses, collectively covering more than 240 million kilometers, have proven their reliability and contribution to clean mass mobility.
With this latest initiative, Tata Motors is not only fostering a greener workforce commute but also reinforcing its leadership in India’s electric transport sector, showcasing how sustainability can be seamlessly integrated into corporate operations.
