Why "Slash-and-Burn" Farming Isn't the Forest Destroyer It Sounds Like

Swidden agriculture, commonly called slash-and-burn farming, has been practiced on every inhabited continent throughout human history and has long been blamed for driving rainforest destruction. A new study analysing more than 18,000 forest patches worldwide finds that framing is largely mistaken, showing instead that unwritten social rules within small communities, rather than government oversight, often regulate land use closely enough to support both harvests and forest regeneration sustainably over time.

 

What Swidden Agriculture Actually Involves

 

Swidden is among humanity's oldest farming systems, practiced in tropical and subtropical forests for roughly 10,000 years. In Belize, where much of the underlying research took place, the process follows several distinct steps: farmers clear a patch of forest and let the felled trees dry out, then burn them, a step that releases the carbon stored in the wood back into the soil where it functions as fertiliser. When the rainy season arrives, crops such as corn are planted and harvested once or twice before soil nutrients begin depleting, at which point the field is left fallow, given time to rest while the forest regrows around it.

Lead author Sean Downey, an anthropology professor at Ohio State University, first became interested in Belizean swidden agriculture in the early 2000s, later noticing a striking visual contrast in satellite imagery at the Guatemalan border: cleared pasture on the Guatemalan side, against an intricate, patchwork mosaic of tropical forest on the Belizean side where Mayan communities are concentrated.

How Neighbourly Cooperation Regulates Land Use

 

The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, traces that patchwork mosaic pattern to something as ordinary as neighbours deciding whether to help each other clear and plant a new field. When a farmer asks for help planting a reasonably sized plot, most neighbours will show up, but if the farmer requests too much, a 20-acre field rather than a two-acre one, fewer people volunteer, and without enough labour the larger plot simply cannot be cleared. Over time, that dynamic guides farmers toward requesting an appropriately sized plot, naturally limiting how much land any individual clears.

This process, in which shared expectations about right and wrong behaviour shape people's choices, is known as normative reasoning, and it connects to research by Nobel Prize-winning economist Elinor Ostrom, who demonstrated that small communities can protect shared local resources through social sanctions, in this case withholding cooperation, rather than through formal rules or government enforcement. Rather than a central authority dictating how much land each farmer may clear, the community's own labour-sharing customs impose a practical ceiling on land use.

 

Building a Model of Self-Organising Land Management

 

Downey's interdisciplinary team, spanning anthropology, physics, applied mathematics and remote sensing, built a computer model and analysed satellite imagery from farming communities across Central and South America, sub-Saharan Africa, and South and Southeast Asia to study labour sharing, land use and site selection patterns for swidden agriculture. They found that when farmers naturally coordinate their land-clearing efforts through these social norms, the result is a mosaic of swidden fields following fractal, self-repeating patterns, while the same cultural norms simultaneously limit the total area cleared. Downey noted that until now, few formal models existed to demonstrate how small-scale swidden communities regulate land use without relying on top-down rules.

Why Moderate Disturbance Can Boost Biodiversity

 

A further finding complicates the assumption that any forest clearing is inherently harmful. While clearing too much forest does convert it into grassland, the study found that forest biodiversity actually increases under intermediate levels of disturbance. Downey explained that swidden patches create new ecosystem niches during the fallow stage, conditions in which different species thrive, producing higher biodiversity across the broader landscape than a mature, undisturbed forest alone would support.

That finding reframes swidden not as an activity that automatically degrades forest ecosystems, but as one that, practiced in moderation and governed by the kind of social norms the study documents, can actively enhance biodiversity, a benefit the researchers say has not yet been incorporated into conservation or climate policy.

 

Why It Matters

 

Downey argued the practical takeaway for policymakers is that small-scale rural communities already possess the capacity to manage community forests sustainably, and need support to solve land-use problems through their own customary practices rather than through imposed external rules, since effective solutions will look different in Belize than in Africa or Indonesia. That distinction matters for climate and conservation policy more broadly, since interventions built on the assumption that all traditional land-clearing practices require external regulation risk overriding governance systems that are already functioning, while genuine support for community-led management could prove more effective at protecting forest carbon stocks and biodiversity than top-down restrictions poorly matched to local social structures.
