State Grid Corporation of China and its Brazilian subsidiary CPFL Energia have expanded their cooperation on smart grid technologies and electricity infrastructure modernisation through a series of technical demonstrations and joint innovation activities. They presented the developments at the China-Brazil Power Innovation Exchange Forum, which began on 26 October 2026 in Campinas and Porto Alegre, Brazil. The week-long programme brought together more than 6,000 electricity sector professionals through in-person and online participation, with State Grid International Development and State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power also contributing to the technical exchanges.
The initiative showcased six technologies jointly developed by Chinese and Brazilian teams, alongside more than ten technologies independently developed by State Grid. These included automated grounding wire installation and removal equipment, lightweight maintenance robots, anti-condensation coatings, high-voltage live-line working tools and intelligent substation monitoring systems. The technologies are designed to support electricity network maintenance, equipment monitoring and operational safety, potentially improving the reliability and efficiency of Brazil's power infrastructure.

During the programme, technical specialists conducted field research at electricity dispatch and power trading centres and completed real-world verification activities involving substation equipment. The companies also presented solutions and signed cooperation agreements to accelerate the use of lightweight maintenance robots, drone-based grid inspections, and equipment designed to prevent bird-related interference with electricity infrastructure. However, the announcement did not disclose the number of planned installations or measurable operational improvements from the demonstrations.
The collaboration builds on the China-Brazil Electric Innovation and Sharing Alliance, established in November 2024 by State Grid Brazil Holding and partner institutions, companies and universities. The alliance provides a platform for joint research, technology development and knowledge exchange between the two countries. State Grid aims to expand the application of its electricity network technologies in Brazil, supporting infrastructure modernisation and technical cooperation. The environmental benefits of these developments will depend on their eventual deployment and demonstrated contributions to grid performance and energy system efficiency.
