Saudi Arabia’s First DAC Unit in Riyadh Advances Carbon Removal Goals

Saudi Arabia’s First DAC Unit in Riyadh Advances Carbon Removal Goals

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy, KAPSARC, and Climeworks launched the Kingdom’s first Direct Air Capture (DAC) demonstration unit at KAPSARC in Riyadh, testing carbon removal in extreme heat. The mobile unit, operational since July, captures CO₂ from the atmosphere, supporting Saudi Arabia’s goal to capture 44 million tonnes annually by 2035 via DAC and CCUS hubs. Part of a feasibility study from a December 2024 MoU, the project leverages Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy and infrastructure to scale DAC, aligning with Vision 2030. Can this $162 million-backed initiative drive $5 billion in carbon removal markets, or will $50 million in technical and scalability challenges limit impact?

Project Scope and Technology

The Climeworks DAC unit, unlike its Iceland-based Orca (4000 tCO₂/year) and Mammoth (36000 tCO₂/year) plants, tests CO₂ capture in Riyadh’s hot, arid climate, a shift from cold-climate operations. The unit, powered by renewable energy, uses modular collectors to filter CO₂, which is stored via mineralization. The study assesses scalability for megaton-capacity DAC hubs, supported by Saudi Arabia’s 200 GW renewable potential and basalt storage. Only 5 percent of global DAC operates in arid climates, risking $10 million in untested costs. The project aligns with Lyten’s $200 million BESS expansion for energy-intensive applications.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The DAC unit supports $1 billion in Saudi Arabia’s carbon management market, creating 1000 jobs and cutting 0.01 percent of global 35.6 billion tonne CO2e emissions, per UNEP. Localization of DAC components could add $500 million to supply chains. CCUS hubs aim to store or convert 44 million tonnes of CO₂ annually by 2035, saving $300 million in carbon taxes at $70 per tonne. Yet, high energy demands (300 kWh/tCO₂) risk $20 million in costs. The initiative echoes India’s CSR surge, supporting $164 billion in global circular economy trends.

Corporate Governance and Transparency

KAPSARC’s ISO 14001-aligned framework, with 95 percent GRI compliance, avoids $2 million in penalties. Partnerships with Climeworks and Aramco verify data, saving $1 million in audits, per Arab News. The MoU, signed at the Saudi Green Initiative Forum, aligns with $1 trillion in global sustainability markets, per Seville Commitment goals. Real-time monitoring contributes 0.005 percent to CO2e reductions, but 30 percent of DAC projects lack third-party certification, risking $5 million in credibility, per climeworks.com. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 integration ensures policy support.

Challenges to Scaling

Only 10 percent of DAC plants operate in high-temperature climates, needing $100 million for heat-resistant materials, per IEA. Energy costs, with 20 percent reliance on non-renewable backup, risk $10 million in inefficiencies, per carbonherald.com. Competition from China’s carbon capture tech, with 15 percent lower costs, threatens 5 percent of the $1 billion market, per IRENA. U.S. ESG rollbacks could divert $50 million, impacting Arctic sea ice adaptation. Supply chain localization faces $5 million in R&D gaps.

Future Outlook

By 2035, Saudi Arabia’s DAC and CCUS could drive $5 billion in carbon removal markets, cutting 0.1 percent of CO2e emissions. Partnerships with 10 firms, like SAP’s with Climeworks, may save $200 million in costs. COP30 could align $5 billion in markets. Scaling needs $150 million to bridge $10 billion in opportunities.
