RWE has fed electricity into the German grid for the first time from its Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm, just weeks after installing the project's first turbine. The milestone comes as part of the broader 1.6 gigawatt Nordseecluster project, RWE's largest offshore wind development currently under construction, which the company operates as a joint venture with Norges Bank Investment Management holding a 49 percent stake.
How the Project Is Being Built Out in Stages
Nordseecluster A, with a total capacity of 660 megawatts across 44 wind turbines, is expected to be fully connected to the grid by early 2027, with installation and step-by-step testing and commissioning currently under way. Electricity generated by the turbines will be fed into two offshore substations, which raise the power to the voltage required for transmission before it moves to the grid operator's converter station and onward to the mainland. The project requires two separate substations because it has two distinct grid connection points, a structural detail that reflects how large offshore wind farms increasingly need multiple connection routes to the mainland grid to handle the volume of power a project of this scale generates.
That staged commissioning process, testing and connecting turbines individually rather than waiting for the entire farm to be complete, allows the project to start delivering power to the grid well before full capacity is reached, giving both RWE and grid operators an earlier opportunity to validate performance and identify any technical issues before the remaining turbines come online.

Why a Second Phase Extends the Project's Timeline
A second phase, Nordseecluster B, will add a further 900 megawatts of capacity through 60 Vestas turbines. Some components for that phase are already in production, with foundation installation scheduled to begin next year, turbine installation following in 2028, and commercial operations expected to start in early 2029. Splitting a project of this scale into two distinct phases, rather than building the full 1.6 gigawatts simultaneously, is a common approach in large offshore wind development, allowing developers to spread capital expenditure, supply chain demand and construction risk across a longer timeline rather than concentrating all of it at once.
Once both phases are complete, the combined Nordseecluster project is expected to generate approximately 6.5 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, a volume that reflects the scale ambition behind treating the two phases as a single integrated project despite their staggered construction and commissioning schedules extending into 2029.

Why the Power Is Aimed at Industrial Decarbonisation
RWE plans to direct the electricity toward customised energy solutions for its industrial customers as part of their own decarbonisation efforts, positioning the project's output specifically at supporting industrial emissions reduction rather than general grid supply alone. That framing matters because industrial customers, particularly energy-intensive manufacturers, often require both large volumes of power and specific contractual arrangements, such as long-term offtake agreements, to justify their own investment decisions in switching from fossil fuel-based processes to electrified alternatives.
By structuring the project's output around industrial decarbonisation needs rather than purely wholesale market sales, RWE is positioning Nordseecluster as infrastructure that directly enables corporate emissions reduction commitments, rather than simply adding generic renewable capacity to the grid. Sven Utermöhlen, chief executive of RWE Offshore Wind, said the project was progressing exactly as planned, with the milestone reflecting the performance of the company's teams and supply chain partners, and that the completed project would make an important contribution to Germany's energy security while helping decarbonise industry. Whether Nordseecluster B's 2028 turbine installation and 2029 commercial operations proceed on schedule, and whether RWE secures the industrial offtake agreements needed to fully realise the project's decarbonisation potential, will determine how completely this 1.6 gigawatt development delivers on both its energy security and industrial emissions reduction goals.
