Mondi Commits $129 Million to Biomass Power Plant in Slovakia to Strengthen Energy Security

Mondi Commits $129 Million to Biomass Power Plant in Slovakia to Strengthen Energy Security

Mondi SCP, one of Central Europe’s largest pulp and paper producers, has announced a substantial investment of €120 million, or approximately $129 million, to construct a state-of-the-art biomass power plant at its industrial site in Ružomberok, Slovakia. The project marks a significant step forward in the company’s journey toward energy self-reliance and environmental stewardship.

Backed by funding from the European Union’s Modernisation Fund, this initiative aligns with broader regional goals to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy systems. The new plant is expected to be completed and operational by 2027.

Increasing Energy Self-Sufficiency and Reducing Dependency on Gas

Once operational, the biomass facility will significantly raise the energy self-sufficiency of Mondi’s Ružomberok mill. The current energy independence of the site stands at 75 percent. With the new plant in place, this figure is expected to increase to 90 percent, a substantial improvement that enhances the mill’s operational stability and protects it from energy supply disruptions or price volatility.

The plant is also designed to support Ružomberok’s local district heating system, providing reliable, sustainable heat to surrounding communities and industrial users. This dual-purpose approach reflects a growing trend in industrial energy projects that serve both business and civic infrastructure needs.

Advancing Air Quality and Emission Reduction

Environmental improvement is a key component of the project. The biomass facility will replace an aging bark boiler system that no longer meets modern efficiency and emissions standards. Mondi’s new system is engineered to comply with the most rigorous emission regulations in the European Union.

Once complete, the plant is expected to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 50 percent. Even more impressive is the projected reduction in particulate matter, which could fall by as much as 83 percent. These improvements will not only contribute to cleaner air in the Ružomberok region but also help Mondi advance its sustainability objectives.

Circular Design Using Industry Residues and Certified Biomass

In line with circular economy principles, the new plant will use biomass sourced from two primary channels: residual material from the pulp and paper production process and wood biomass from responsibly managed, certified forests. By repurposing production waste that would otherwise go to landfills, the facility minimizes waste generation while providing a renewable energy source.

The sourcing of biomass under certified forestry schemes ensures that the energy production does not contribute to deforestation or ecosystem degradation. Instead, it supports sustainable land use and responsible natural resource management.

Contribution to Mondi’s MAP2030 Sustainability Goals

The investment is part of Mondi’s broader sustainability roadmap known as the Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030). This corporate strategy aims to improve the company’s environmental footprint by cutting greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing circularity, and building resilience into its operations.

Mondi emphasized that the environmental gains achieved by this project will play an essential role in meeting MAP2030 targets. These include commitments to reduce carbon emissions, adopt more sustainable production methods, and strengthen community engagement through responsible energy development.

A Regional Model for Green Industrial Transformation

Mondi’s biomass project demonstrates how industrial manufacturers can integrate environmental sustainability with core business operations. By blending innovation in energy infrastructure with a commitment to air quality and waste reduction, the company is setting a benchmark for other large-scale producers across Europe.

With political and economic momentum shifting toward energy security and climate action, projects like Mondi’s biomass plant in Slovakia signal a broader transformation. Investments that reduce emissions, enhance self-sufficiency, and deliver measurable sustainability outcomes are no longer optional, they are becoming a business imperative.
