Miral, a leading developer of immersive destinations and experiences in Abu Dhabi, has announced four conservation initiatives for 2026 under Impact by Miral, its strategic platform dedicated to funding and implementing social and environmental projects across the emirate. The four approved programmes cover sea turtle population tracking across the Arabian Gulf, AI-powered sustainable aquaculture, protection of the Arabian Sand Cat in Abu Dhabi's deserts and conservation of the critically endangered Dama Gazelle. Led by Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center and Al Ain Zoo alongside leading researchers and conservation experts, the initiatives represent a science-based approach that combines applied research, conservation genomics, artificial intelligence and data-focused monitoring to improve biodiversity conservation across the UAE's marine and land ecosystems.
The Four Conservation Programmes
The sea turtle population tracking initiative spans the Arabian Gulf and aims to build a comprehensive understanding of turtle distribution, migration patterns and population health across the region. AI-enabled monitoring tools are being integrated into the programme to process observational data at a scale and speed that traditional survey methods cannot achieve. The aquaculture programme applies AI to support more sustainable fish production, addressing both food security objectives and reducing the environmental footprint of seafood supply chains in the UAE.
The Arabian Sand Cat protection initiative targets a species facing significant habitat pressure in Abu Dhabi's desert environment, using conservation genomics and field monitoring to inform population management and habitat preservation strategies. The Dama Gazelle programme addresses one of the region's most critically endangered terrestrial species, with structured conservation and reintroduction efforts designed to stabilise and eventually rebuild the population. Together the four programmes demonstrate a deliberately diversified approach that covers both marine and terrestrial ecosystems and applies technology-driven methods across each conservation priority.

Strategic Governance and Institutional Framework
Impact by Miral was launched in late 2025 in partnership with the Authority of Social Contribution, Ma'an, and operates across four strategic pillars covering Conservation, Arts and Culture, Health and Wellbeing, and Education and Skills Development. The fund is overseen by a Steering Committee and an Advisory Working Group designed to ensure transparency, oversight and alignment with Abu Dhabi's environmental and social goals. The inaugural meetings of the Advisory Working Group resulted in the approval of the four conservation priorities, marking the first formal programme cycle under the new governance structure.
Taghrid Alsaeed, Executive Director of Marketing, Communications and Events at Miral and Vice Chair of Impact by Miral, said the approval of the four conservation priorities marks an important milestone that underscores both the organisation's ambition and the strength of collective action. She said the initiative is contributing to a more sustainable future for Abu Dhabi by actively safeguarding its natural ecosystems and shaping a lasting legacy for future generations. The involvement of top academic and environmental institutions in the Advisory Working Group, chaired by Dr Elise Marquis of Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center, provides the scientific credibility needed to ensure programmes deliver measurable conservation outcomes.

Outlook for AI-Enabled Conservation in the UAE
The Miral initiatives reflect a broader regional trend in which Gulf states are investing in technology-driven conservation programmes aligned with national biodiversity and environmental commitments. The integration of AI and conservation genomics into wildlife monitoring represents an advancement beyond traditional survey-based approaches, offering greater precision and scalability in tracking endangered species and ecosystem health. As the UAE deepens its sustainability commitments ahead of national development targets, science-based conservation programmes backed by institutional governance are likely to attract increasing funding and policy support.
Whether Impact by Miral can translate its four approved programmes into measurable conservation outcomes will depend on the depth of scientific partnership, sustained funding commitment and the effective application of AI monitoring tools across diverse and challenging environments. Sustained execution would establish Impact by Miral as a credible conservation platform and reinforce Abu Dhabi's positioning as a leader in biodiversity protection within the Gulf region. The combination of technology, scientific expertise and institutional governance creates a strong foundation for a programme portfolio capable of delivering lasting environmental impact.
