Rudong Offshore Wind Farm Surpasses 10 Billion kWh, Avoiding 7.4 Million Tonnes of CO2

Rudong Offshore Wind Farm Surpasses 10 Billion kWh, Avoiding 7.4 Million Tonnes of CO2

China Three Gorges Renewables' 800 MW Rudong offshore wind farm in Jiangsu Province has surpassed 10 billion kWh in cumulative power generation, equivalent to approximately 3 million tonnes of standard coal and 7.4 million tonnes of avoided carbon dioxide emissions. The project is Asia's first offshore wind farm to transmit power to shore using VSC-HVDC (voltage source converter high-voltage direct current) technology, using an offshore converter station built by Chinese engineering firm ZPMC.

VSC-HVDC technology allows electricity generated far offshore to be transmitted to the onshore grid with lower transmission losses over long distances compared with conventional alternating current transmission, an important technical consideration for offshore wind projects located far enough from shore that standard AC transmission would lose significant energy over the required distance. Delivered and commissioned in 2021, the Rudong converter station uses ±400 kV VSC-HVDC technology and was, at the time of its completion, both Asia's first offshore converter station of this kind and the world's largest offshore VSC-HVDC converter station, also holding the highest voltage rating of any comparable facility globally.

That combination of firsts, being the first Asian deployment of this specific transmission technology for offshore wind while simultaneously setting global records for scale and voltage rating, positioned the Rudong project as an early technical benchmark for how large-scale offshore wind farms sited far from shore can efficiently deliver their generated power to the broader grid, a transmission challenge that becomes increasingly significant as offshore wind development moves toward larger farms situated further from coastlines to access stronger and more consistent wind resources.
