Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) has expanded its Sustainability Garage initiative by establishing two new Centres of Excellence in Hyderabad and New Delhi, reflecting the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable mobility and environmental innovation.
Climate Tech Incubator
In Hyderabad, the Climate Tech Incubator will support 25 social enterprises focused on sustainable mobility and environmental solutions. Partnering with T-Hub, a leading Indian startup incubator, MBRDI will provide seed funding, mentorship, and access to technical expertise. The program will also engage over 500 students in a bootcamp designed to foster climate technology innovation.
Centre of Excellence for Charging Infrastructure
MBRDI, in collaboration with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), is launching a Centre of Excellence in New Delhi, dedicated to charging infrastructure. This center will offer specialized training programs on maintaining charging stations, with the goal of certifying 60 young professionals this year.
Commitment to Sustainability
Renata Jungo Brüngger, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG for Integrity, Governance & Sustainability, emphasized the broader mission: “Sustainability means creating permanent value for all stakeholder groups. As a global company and corporate citizen, we want to make a positive contribution to society that goes beyond our core business activities. With the Sustainability Garage, Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India underlines the goal of our worldwide corporate citizenship strategy to promote ecological sustainability and foster community empowerment.”
Leadership and Innovation
Manu Saale, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India, highlighted the initiative’s significance: “Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India is committed to leading the charge in sustainable mobility. The new Sustainability Garage projects will play a vital role in furthering innovation from India to meet some of the most pressing global challenges. We are confident that India’s digital R&D talent pool and pioneering spirit will lead us to some transformative climate-positive solutions for the world.”
Sustainability Garage Expansion
This expansion builds on the success of the first Sustainability Garage Centre of Excellence, launched at the Prayoga Institute of Education Research in February 2024, which focuses on researching and developing sustainable materials.
The expansion was announced during the Mercedes-Benz Sustainability Dialogue India 2024 in New Delhi, where experts from various sectors discussed sustainability challenges and solutions in mobility, decarbonization, circularity, traffic safety, and digital trust.
Through these initiatives, Mercedes-Benz continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability and innovation, making a positive impact on both global and local communities.
