Google has signed a major new agreement with Brazil-based reforestation company Mombak to purchase 200,000 tons of verified CO₂ removals generated through the restoration of degraded land in the Amazon rainforest. The deal, which builds on a 50,000-ton purchase announced last year, marks a substantial step forward in Google’s nature-based carbon removal strategy. Under the new agreement, Google’s expanded purchase brings the total volume of carbon removal credits contracted from Mombak to 250,000 tons. The collaboration also aligns with Google’s role in the Symbiosis Coalition, an initiative launched in 2023 alongside Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce. The coalition’s mission is to accelerate the scale-up of reliable, nature-based carbon removal by committing to purchase up to 20 million tons of verified credits over time. Mombak has been chosen as the first project under this coalition—a significant endorsement of its methodology and governance standards. Its projects integrate ecological science, community engagement, and financial transparency, creating a framework that other carbon removal developers may emulate. For the participating tech giants, such partnerships not only help achieve net-zero commitments but also serve as a testing ground for scalable models that blend technology, nature restoration, and corporate accountability.

In addition to carbon removal, Google and Mombak are pioneering an innovative AI-driven biodiversity monitoring collaboration. Google DeepMind’s Perch team will work with Mombak to assess the ecological health of restored areas by analyzing bioacoustic data from the Amazon. The Perch model listens to hours of soundscape recordings from bird calls to insect hums to evaluate species diversity and ecosystem vitality. This technology will provide new insights into how reforestation projects can regenerate complex ecological networks, going beyond carbon accounting to measure tangible biodiversity recovery. Such partnerships between climate technology and ecological science could redefine how companies evaluate the broader environmental impact of their carbon investments.

Mombak’s projects go beyond carbon capture, they also contribute to Brazil’s social and economic development goals. According to Google’s Carbon Removal Commercialization Program Manager, Reilly O’Hara, Mombak’s approach balances “high-integrity reforestation using native, biodiverse forests and strong durability safeguards with industrial-scale operations.” This combination, O’Hara added, is essential to achieving both environmental credibility and meaningful impact at scale.
