Mitsubishi Electric, MUFG Bank and Climate Investment have invested in Canadian satellite-based greenhouse gas monitoring company GHGSat through convertible notes issued in October 2026. Announced on 6 November, the investment will strengthen an existing partnership to develop satellite monitoring technology that can identify and measure methane and carbon dioxide emissions from individual industrial facilities. The companies did not disclose the investment amount.
Founded in 2011 and headquartered in Québec, GHGSat operates a satellite constellation that provides high-resolution observations of industrial greenhouse gas emissions. Its technology can monitor individual facilities daily and deliver detection alerts within hours, helping companies and regulators identify emission sources, detect leaks and improve emissions reporting. The technology is particularly relevant to methane monitoring across energy infrastructure, where identifying leaks can support faster corrective action.

The investment builds on a partnership established in November 2024 between Mitsubishi Electric, MUFG Bank, Satellite Data Services and GHGSat. The companies are developing a monitoring service that combines Japan's GOSAT-GW satellite, also known as IBUKI GW, with GHGSat's constellation. Using a method known as "tip and cue", IBUKI GW identifies potential emissions across large geographical areas before directing GHGSat satellites to conduct detailed observations of suspected sources. The approach aims to improve the efficiency and precision of industrial emissions monitoring.
Mitsubishi Electric is leading the service's development, which the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) selected for a fiscal 2026 technology verification project. The company made the investment through its ME Innovation Fund, while MUFG Bank participated through green convertible notes issued under GHGSat's Green Finance Framework. DNV has provided an independent opinion that the framework aligns with relevant green financing principles.
Climate Investment, which manages $1.8 billion in committed capital, also participated in the financing. The investment will support further development of the satellite monitoring service and strengthen GHGSat's business growth. By combining wide-area satellite observations with facility-level emissions measurements, the partners aim to provide more reliable data for industrial emissions management and decarbonization.
