EU Approves €84 Million Danish Aid Scheme for Cleantech Manufacturing

EU Approves €84 Million Danish Aid Scheme for Cleantech Manufacturing

The European Commission has approved an €84 million Danish state aid scheme to support manufacturing capacity for clean technologies and their key components, structured under the EU's Clean Industrial Deal State Aid Framework. The scheme will provide direct grants to companies investing in manufacturing capacity for net-zero technologies and the critical raw materials required to produce them, with aid available until 31 December 2026.

Eligible technologies fall under the framework's Annex II list, covering solar photovoltaic and solar thermal components, onshore and offshore wind equipment, and a range of parts used in battery and other energy storage systems, hydrogen production units, power grids and other clean power and heat systems. That breadth spans much of the core hardware underpinning the broader energy transition, positioning the scheme to support manufacturing across multiple clean technology categories rather than targeting a single sector.

The Commission said the scheme was necessary and proportionate to accelerate the transition to a net-zero economy, with support limited to the minimum required and expected to have a limited impact on competition and trade within the European Union, the standard legal threshold state aid approvals must meet to comply with EU rules preventing government support from unfairly distorting the single market.

This approval extends a pattern of EU state aid clearances under the Clean Industrial Deal framework, which has similarly supported clean energy and industrial decarbonisation initiatives across other member states, reflecting the bloc's broader strategy of using targeted national funding to build domestic manufacturing capacity for the technologies its energy transition depends on.
