March 6, 2025 – A rare deep-sea anglerfish made an unexpected journey to the ocean’s surface, sparking global fascination and an outpouring of emotion on social media. The humpback anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsonii), typically found between 200 and 600 meters below the surface, was spotted near Tenerife Island by researchers from Condrik Tenerife in February.

While scanning the waters for sharks, researchers instead encountered the black seadevil, an event so rare that photographer David Jara Boguñá quickly documented it. The footage of the fish’s final moments in daylight captivated millions, shifting public perception of deep-sea creatures from fear to fascination.

The Tragic Beauty of the Deep

Anglerfish have long fascinated scientists. Female anglerfish grow to about 15 centimeters and use a glowing lure—powered by bioluminescent bacteria—to attract prey in the pitch-black ocean depths. Males, on the other hand, are tiny (3 cm) parasites that permanently fuse to a female for survival.

Why this particular anglerfish rose to the surface remains a mystery. Scientists speculate old age or environmental changes may have played a role. The fish was observed for hours before it died, and its body was sent to the Museum of Nature and Archaeology in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for further study.

The video went viral, inspiring memes, poetry, and artwork worldwide. Many social media users saw the fish as a symbol of resilience. One Reddit user imagined the creature as an “old grandmother chasing her dream to see the sun one last time.” Others compared its fate to Icarus, the Greek mythological figure who perished after flying too close to the sun.
