Coconut Creek Launches Florida's First Fully Electric Waste Collection Fleet

Republic Services and the City of Coconut Creek have launched Florida's first fully electric residential recycling and waste collection fleet, positioning the city among the first communities nationally to adopt fully electric residential collection service. The fleet includes six McNeilus Volterra EVs, which Republic Services describes as the industry's first fully integrated zero-emission electric recycling and waste collection vehicles.

 

Replacing conventional diesel-powered collection trucks with fully electric vehicles eliminates tailpipe emissions from the vehicles' daily collection routes entirely, while also reducing the noise typically associated with waste collection operations, since electric drivetrains generate substantially less operating noise than diesel engines, particularly during the frequent stopping and idling collection routes require. The vehicles also incorporate a range of advanced safety features, including 360-degree camera systems, enhanced driver visibility, lane-departure sensors, automated emergency braking, and audible alerts designed to improve awareness for pedestrians and nearby motorists, safety considerations particularly relevant for large collection vehicles that make frequent stops in residential neighbourhoods.

Republic Services states it operates North America's largest electric collection fleet, positioning the Coconut Creek deployment as one component within a broader company-wide fleet electrification strategy rather than an isolated municipal pilot project. That existing scale suggests the company has already built operational experience deploying and maintaining electric collection vehicles elsewhere, relevant context for a municipality adopting this technology for its curbside services for the first time.

Coconut Creek Mayor Jeffrey Wasserman tied the launch to the return of curbside recycling in the city, framing the rollout alongside community events intended to engage residents with the change.
