Byrne Energy and Climate Foundation Launches to Fund Interdisciplinary Climate PhDs

The Byrne Energy and Climate Foundation has launched, led by energy and climate scholar Dr. John Byrne, to fund doctoral fellowships specifically targeting research that crosses academic disciplinary boundaries at the intersection of energy, climate and justice. The foundation aims to establish partnerships with 10 universities in its first cycle, with fellows already enrolled at Seoul National University and Arizona State University.

Fellowships are renewable for up to four years, intended to give doctoral candidates sustained time and institutional backing for research that a single discipline-based department's funding cycle might not otherwise support. The foundation is organising its early support around three research areas: developing new energy-climate models for transitioning away from fossil fuels, cultivating interdisciplinary research culture across universities, and researching how to achieve sustainable outcomes across all communities rather than only those already positioned to benefit from the renewable energy transition.

Dr. Byrne, founder and president of BECF, said "climate change, energy transition, and environmental injustice are systemic by nature," but that "academic structures constrain inquiry within silos, making it difficult for the most important research to get done." The foundation is structured as a multigenerational commitment, with initial resources including support directly from Dr. Byrne and his children, Brian and Tara. Byrne has chaired the doctoral committees of nearly 80 students over his career, has been a contributing author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and is Distinguished Professor of Energy and Climate Policy Emeritus at the University of Delaware. He is also co-founder and president of the Foundation for Renewable Energy and Environment, BECF's sister organisation, whose earlier pilot doctoral fellowship programme helped inform BECF's model.

Fellowship applications are by invitation only, with faculty and prospective students able to submit expressions of interest reviewed periodically by BECF's advisors.
