Boeing has entered into a multi-year agreement with carbon removal platform Carbonfuture to procure at least 40,000 tonnes of durable carbon dioxide removal credits. The transaction represents one of the largest purchases of high-durability carbon removal credits within the aviation sector and forms part of Boeing’s broader strategy to manage residual emissions that cannot yet be eliminated through operational or technological improvements.
The credits will be sourced initially from a diversified portfolio of biochar carbon removal projects located across the Global South. The agreement is structured to allow Boeing to expand its purchases over time, depending on future needs and market conditions.
Addressing Residual Aviation Emissions
The aviation industry faces structural challenges in decarbonisation. Aircraft have long service lifetimes, and while improvements in fuel efficiency, airframe design, and sustainable aviation fuel are expected to reduce emissions intensity, certain emissions remain difficult to eliminate in the near term.
Boeing intends to apply the purchased credits toward residual Scope 3 emissions linked to employee business travel, categorised under Scope 3 Category 6. This approach reflects a growing trend among large corporates to address indirect emissions alongside direct operational impacts.
Durable carbon removal differs from traditional offsetting models that focus on avoided emissions. Instead, removal projects extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in a form intended to remain sequestered for extended periods. In this case, the credits are generated through biochar projects.
Biochar is produced by heating organic biomass in a controlled process that converts the material into a stable carbon-rich substance. When applied to soil, biochar improves soil health and fertility while storing carbon in a durable form. The process can deliver both climate mitigation and agricultural benefits, particularly in regions where soil degradation is prevalent.

Digital Monitoring and Market Integrity
Carbonfuture will provide the infrastructure to track the lifecycle of the carbon removal credits. Its digital platform records the process from biochar production to soil application and maintains documentation of credit ownership. The system is designed to enhance transparency and traceability, addressing ongoing concerns about quality and verification within voluntary carbon markets.
For Boeing, the digital platform enables management and allocation of credits within its broader sustainability portfolio. The agreement also provides optionality for additional future purchases under the same framework.
Corporate buyers are increasingly favouring removal-based credits supported by measurable verification mechanisms. Market scrutiny over credit quality has intensified in recent years, prompting companies to prioritise projects with clear permanence characteristics and auditable documentation.

Alignment With Aviation Climate Frameworks
The procurement aligns with broader global aviation climate frameworks, including the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, known as CORSIA. While CORSIA focuses primarily on managing emissions growth from international aviation, durable carbon removal is emerging as a complementary mechanism for addressing residual emissions at the corporate level.
As passenger demand for air travel continues to expand, the aviation sector faces pressure to demonstrate credible decarbonisation pathways. Carbon removal is increasingly viewed as a bridging tool while longer-term technological solutions, such as advanced fuels and new propulsion systems, mature.
The Boeing and Carbonfuture agreement signals a shift toward higher-durability carbon removal within hard-to-abate industries. By combining removal procurement with ongoing investment in fuel and efficiency innovation, aerospace companies are constructing multi-layered strategies to manage long-term climate exposure.
