BlackRock Launches ESG Equity Protection Fund for UK Pensions

BlackRock Launches ESG Equity Protection Fund for UK Pensions

BlackRock has introduced its first downside-protected equity fund on its UK retirement platform, combining global equity investments with sustainability criteria and protection against significant market declines. Reported on 3 November 2026, the BlackRock ACS World ESG Insights Protective Strategies Fund is designed primarily for defined contribution pension schemes, particularly those managing investments for members approaching retirement.

The fund invests through BlackRock's existing World ESG Insights equity strategy, which integrates sustainability considerations into portfolio construction and aims to reduce carbon emissions intensity. The underlying strategy also falls within BlackRock Investment Stewardship's Climate and Decarbonization Stewardship programme, connecting the fund's investment approach with the firm's wider climate-related engagement activities.

To manage investment risk, the fund uses an options-based strategy designed to limit the impact of substantial equity market declines while retaining exposure to potential market gains. Unlike some protection strategies that sell call options and restrict upside returns, BlackRock's approach purchases call options to maintain uncapped participation in equity market growth. However, the protection strategy does not eliminate investment risk or guarantee returns.

BlackRock's diversified strategies team manages the fund and has more than 20 years of experience in derivatives-based risk management. The firm's risk and quantitative analysis team provides independent oversight, supported by its Aladdin investment risk management platform. The structure offers pension schemes an alternative to traditional retirement de-risking approaches, which typically involve reducing equity exposure as members approach retirement.

Adam Ryan, Head of Diversified Strategies at BlackRock, said, "Traditionally, achieving downside protection often meant limiting participation in equity market gains. Our approach is different." He explained that the strategy aims to help investors manage market declines without abandoning equities' long-term growth potential. The launch expands BlackRock's retirement investment offerings by incorporating sustainability criteria into an equity strategy designed to manage downside risk
