Apple Expands Clean Energy Portfolio with 650 MW of New Solar and Wind Projects Across Europe

Apple Expands Clean Energy Portfolio with 650 MW of New Solar and Wind Projects Across Europe

Apple has announced a major expansion of its renewable energy investments, unveiling 650 megawatts (MW) of new solar and wind projects across Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, and Romania. The initiative marks a pivotal step in the company’s mission to match the electricity used by customers to power Apple products with 100% clean energy, a central pillar of its Apple 2030 carbon-neutrality strategy. According to Apple’s latest Environmental Progress Report, emissions generated during product use the electricity customers consume while charging and operating devices account for 29% of the company’s total carbon footprint. Tackling this category of emissions is essential to achieving Apple’s commitment to become carbon neutral across its entire business, supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030.

Powering Products with Clean Energy

The newly announced projects will add more than 1 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity annually to European power grids by 2030, helping Apple advance its goal of ensuring that every watt of electricity powering iPhones, Macs, and other products is matched with clean energy generation. The agreements represent one of Apple’s most significant clean energy expansions in Europe to date, unlocking over $600 million in financing for large-scale renewable development. The projects are expected to create local jobs, diversify regional energy supplies, and strengthen Europe’s renewable infrastructure as it accelerates toward its own net-zero transition.

“By 2030, we want our users to know that all the energy it takes to charge their iPhone or power their Mac is matched with clean electricity,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. “Our new projects in Europe will help us achieve our ambitious Apple 2030 goal, while contributing to healthy communities, thriving economies, and secure energy sources across the continent.”

Beyond Corporate Operations: Matching Customer Use

While Apple’s corporate facilities and supply chain have already achieved 100% renewable energy coverage, the company is now focusing on emissions from customer product use, which remain outside its direct operational control. To close this gap, Apple is investing in new solar, wind, and grid-based renewable projects worldwide, ensuring that energy used by consumers to power Apple products no matter where they are located is effectively matched by clean electricity added to global grids. The company’s strategy focuses on additionality, meaning that its investments bring new renewable capacity online, rather than purchasing existing clean power credits. This ensures a genuine increase in renewable energy generation globally.

Apple’s Global Climate Leadership

Apple has long positioned itself as one of the world’s most climate-forward technology companies. Since setting its carbon neutrality goal in 2020, the company has:

  • Transitioned its corporate operations and data centers to 100% renewable energy.
  • Partnered with over 250 suppliers to decarbonize their manufacturing operations.
  • Invested in nature-based carbon removal projects that restore ecosystems and biodiversity.
  • Supported grid modernization and renewable infrastructure in key markets around the world.

These efforts have enabled Apple to maintain progress toward its 2030 target even as its product portfolio and customer base continue to expand.

Clean Energy and the Future of Product Sustainability

Apple’s European clean energy expansion underscores the growing intersection between technology and climate accountability. By linking consumer energy use to renewable generation, the company is extending sustainability beyond corporate boundaries turning everyday product use into a component of its global decarbonization plan. Industry analysts note that Apple’s approach could set a precedent for consumer electronics companies, demonstrating how corporations can take responsibility for emissions indirectly tied to their products’ lifetime use. The new 650 MW investment, spanning multiple European markets, also signals confidence in cross-border renewable energy financing, at a time when Europe is seeking to accelerate clean power deployment amid geopolitical and supply challenges.

A Global Model for Climate Impact

As Apple moves closer to achieving full carbon neutrality, its clean energy investments represent both a business strategy and a climate commitment. By 2030, every Apple product charged, powered, or connected will be underpinned by renewable energy, reinforcing the company’s role as a global model for corporate climate action.

“Apple’s energy transition is no longer just about reducing emissions within its walls,” said an analyst familiar with the initiative. “It’s about reimagining the entire value chain from production to product use as part of a unified, renewable-powered ecosystem.”

Through its latest renewable energy agreements, Apple is turning that vision into tangible infrastructure a cleaner grid for consumers, and a carbon-free future for the world’s most iconic devices.
