ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund and Aviva Investors have committed €100 million to SL Materials, formerly known as Urban Mine, to support the expansion of its circular concrete business. The follow-on investment will help the company increase production capacity, develop new sites and continue scaling its concrete recovery technology across Europe.
SL Materials focuses on recovering cementitious materials, sand and gravel from demolition waste for reuse in new concrete. Using its Smart Liberator and Smart Refiner technologies, the company aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve resource efficiency in the construction sector by keeping valuable materials in circulation.

The new capital will be used to expand the company’s existing site in Zaandam, add production capacity at new locations in Europe and support further technology optimisation. The funding also comes alongside the company’s rebrand from Urban Mine to SL Materials, signalling a broader European growth phase.
The investment reflects continued interest in circular construction materials as the sector looks for lower-carbon alternatives to conventional concrete production. Concrete remains one of the most emissions-intensive materials in the built environment, making technologies that can recover and reuse construction waste increasingly relevant to both decarbonization and resource-efficiency goals.
Maarten Blomme, Head of Corporate Investments at ABN AMRO, said the bank believes circular concrete can become an industry standard and said the investment would help make high-quality circular concrete available to a wider customer base. He added that supporting companies such as SL Materials is part of ABN AMRO’s role in backing the shift towards a more circular and resilient economy.
