Net-Zero Future 2025

The Net-Zero Future Project, led by Oslo Metropolitan University in collaboration with partner institutions from Germany, India, South Africa, and the USA, is an international alliance dedicated to research and education on minimizing the carbon footprint of the built environment through net-zero buildings. This initiative unites academic partners including Oslo Metropolitan University (Norway), Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany), Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (India), University of Cape Town (South Africa), and Iowa State University (USA), along with public and industry collaborators focused on developing and implementing sustainable materials and technologies. Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals such as quality education, industry innovation, sustainable cities, climate action, and partnerships, the project emphasizes global cooperation to advance net-zero structures for civil infrastructures and societal ecosystems, with an annual conference series as a core component to facilitate knowledge exchange among experts worldwide.

Purpose and Objectives

The primary purpose of the Net-Zero Future Project is to generate new knowledge and inspire future engineers and researchers to reduce buildings' carbon footprints by promoting international research and educational collaboration on net-zero construction. The project aims to overcome barriers to adopting net-zero materials and technologies through partnerships with public and private sectors, while directly contributing to sustainable development goals by enhancing academic cooperation across five countries. It seeks to address environmental challenges in the built environment, foster innovative practices for sustainable urban development, and create a platform for sharing groundbreaking findings to support long-term reductions in carbon emissions.

The project includes organizing annual international conferences, such as the inaugural Net-Zero Future 2024 Conference in Oslo, Norway, which serves as an ongoing forum for presenting research, advancements, and best practices in net-zero structures. Additional activities encompass summer schools, an open-access Ph.D. course on net-zero construction, and dynamic exchange visits among partner institutions to facilitate hands-on research and educational interactions. It also involves collaboration with industry partners for the development, production, and implementation of sustainable materials and technologies, enabling direct application of findings in real-world settings.
