World’s First Big e-Methanol Plant Kicks Off in Denmark

World’s First Big e-Methanol Plant Kicks Off in Denmark

A game-changing green fuel project just launched in Denmark! On May 13, 2025, European Energy fired up the world’s first large-scale e-methanol plant in Kassø, Aabenraa. This plant is now shipping eco-friendly e-methanol to big names like LEGO, Maersk, and Novo Nordisk, helping them ditch fossil fuels and plastics for a cleaner future.

What’s e-Methanol?

e-Methanol is a super-green fuel made by mixing green hydrogen (pulled from water using renewable energy) with biogenic CO2 (captured from organic waste like biogas). The Kassø plant, powered by the nearby 304 MW Kassø Solar Park—Northern Europe’s biggest—churns out 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol a year, slashing carbon emissions by up to 97% compared to fossil-based methanol. It’s a big deal for industries like shipping and manufacturing that can’t easily go electric.

Who’s Using It?

  • Maersk: The shipping giant is fueling its Laura Maersk, the world’s first methanol-powered container ship, with Kassø’s e-methanol. It takes just 3,600 tonnes a year to keep her sailing, but the plant’s output could power a 16,000-container ship for an Asia-Europe round trip. Maersk’s aiming for net-zero emissions by 2040, and this is a key step.
  • LEGO: The toy maker will use e-methanol to make plastic parts like axles and minifigure hands, starting later in 2025. “It’s about making LEGO products greener without losing quality,” said Carsten Rasmussen, LEGO’s Chief Operations Officer.
  • Novo Nordisk: The healthcare company is swapping fossil methanol for e-methanol in medical devices like insulin pens, cutting emissions in its supply chain.

Plus, the plant’s extra heat will warm 3,300 local homes, making it a win for the community too.

Why It’s Awesome?

European Energy, a Danish green energy firm since 2004, teamed up with Japan’s Mitsui & Co. (49% stake) to build this €150 million facility. It’s the first to produce e-methanol at this scale, and it’s a real-world example of “Power-to-X” tech—turning renewable electricity into fuels and materials.

“This is renewable energy in action,” said CEO Knud Erik Andersen.

The plant, which started construction in May 2023, got 29 permits and hit milestones like producing its first hydrogen in January 2025 and raw e-methanol in March.

Why It Matters?

Shipping, which causes 1.7% of global emissions, and industries like plastics are tough to clean up. Kassø’s e-methanol offers a fix, cutting reliance on dirty fuels. With 83% of consumers wanting sustainable products (per a 2024 PwC survey), companies like LEGO and Novo Nordisk are betting on green cred. The plant also shows how teamwork—between Denmark’s renewable know-how and Mitsui’s global reach—can scale up green tech.

What’s Next?

European Energy’s planning bigger plants in Europe, Australia, Brazil, and the US, aiming to drive down costs. Denmark’s pushing hard on Power-to-X, with more e-fuel projects in the works. While Kassø’s output is small compared to global needs, it’s a blueprint for decarbonizing hard-to-crack sectors. As Maersk, LEGO, and Novo Nordisk lead the way, this could spark a wave of greener shipping and manufacturing worldwide.
