Pope Leo XIV Urges Diplomats to Build Peace with Justice and Truth

Pope Leo XIV Urges Diplomats to Build Peace with Justice and Truth

Just a week after becoming Pope, Leo XIV gave his first speech to the Diplomatic Corps at the Holy See on May 16, 2025, calling for a world built on peace, justice, and truth. Speaking to ambassadors from around the globe, the new Pope shared a hopeful vision for diplomacy rooted in human dignity and inspired by his predecessor, Pope Francis.

A Warm Welcome and a Nod to the Past

Pope Leo XIV kicked things off by thanking Ambassador George Poulides of Cyprus, the outgoing Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, for his years of dedication and kindness. He described the diplomats as a “family” that shares life’s ups and downs, with the Church eager to build bridges through its unique, caring approach to diplomacy. The Pope praised Pope Francis for his focus on the poor, the environment, and even artificial intelligence, saying his legacy continues to light the way.

Reflecting on his own life, shaped by travels across North and South America and Europe as the son of immigrants, Pope Leo XIV said he wants to “transcend borders” and strengthen the Church’s ties with nations everywhere.

Three Big Ideas: Peace, Justice, Truth

The heart of the Pope’s message rested on three words: peace, justice, and truth, which he called the foundation of the Church’s mission and the Holy See’s diplomatic work.

  • Peace: Peace isn’t just about no wars—it’s a gift that starts in the heart, built on humility and careful words. “Weapons aren’t the only things that wound,” he said, stressing that harsh words can hurt too. He pushed for religious freedom, interfaith talks, and a stop to the arms race, echoing Pope Francis’ call for real disarmament to make peace possible.
  • Justice: Looking back to Pope Leo XIII’s social teachings, the Pope urged leaders to tackle global inequality by supporting families and respecting everyone’s dignity. As an immigrant’s son, he called for solidarity with all people, no matter where they’re from.
  • Truth: In a world full of online distortions, truth matters. The Pope said truth isn’t just facts—it’s about connecting with Christ’s teachings. This helps tackle big issues like migration, tech, and climate change with honesty and unity.

A Hopeful Path Forward

Wrapping up, Pope Leo XIV tied his ministry to the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope, a time to turn away from conflict and renew spirits. He promised the Holy See will keep working with nations to create a world where everyone can live with dignity, especially in war-torn places like Ukraine and the Holy Land.

Why It Matters

This speech sets the tone for Pope Leo XIV’s leadership, blending Pope Francis’ care for the marginalized with a fresh call for unity. With 83% of people globally wanting leaders to prioritize human rights, per a 2024 Pew survey, his focus on justice and peace hits home.

What’s Next?

As Pope Leo XIV settles into his role, expect more moves to boost interfaith dialogue and push for disarmament, especially during the Jubilee Year. His immigrant roots and global outlook could shape Vatican diplomacy, particularly on migration and climate. For now, his call for peace, justice, and truth is a rallying cry for a world in need of hope.
