Coreshell Raises $24 Million to Scale Low-Cost Silicon EV Batteries

Coreshell raises $24M to scale its low-cost, fast-charging silicon EV batteries, offering higher energy density and reducing reliance on Chinese graphite, while expanding U.S. production.

Investment Fuels Expansion of U.S.-Made Fast-Charging Batteries

Battery technology company Coreshell has secured $24 million to scale up production of its low-cost, fast-charging silicon-based EV batteries. The funding will support increased manufacturing at its California facility and the opening of an additional production site.

Founded in 2017, Coreshell develops silicon anode batteries that offer a 30-40% higher energy density than conventional graphite-based batteries. The lighter, more compact batteries enable longer driving ranges and can charge in under 15 minutes. The company also aims to reduce reliance on Chinese graphite by utilizing domestically sourced metallurgical silicon.

The funding round was led by Ferroglobe, one of the largest silicon metal producers, alongside Zeon Ventures. Other investors include Lane Ventures, Entrada Ventures, Foothill Ventures, Helios Climate Ventures, Translink Investment, Trousdale Ventures, and Asymmetry Ventures.

Jonathan Tan, CEO of Coreshell, emphasized the industry’s shift toward supply chain resilience:

"Automakers recognize that alongside range, supply chain resilience and cost reduction are key to overcoming adoption barriers. Coreshell is addressing these challenges by replacing graphite with domestically sourced metallurgical silicon."

Benoist Ollivier, CTO of Ferroglobe, reinforced the company’s confidence in Coreshell’s innovation:

"We believe Coreshell’s battery technology shows the most promise to fast-track the EV industry in reducing cost and tackling supply chain issues. This is a critical moment to scale a domestic supply chain and drive success in the market."

Impact on the EV Industry

  • Lower-cost, high-energy-density batteries for extended range and faster charging.
  • Strengthened U.S. supply chain by reducing dependence on foreign graphite.
  • Scalability of domestic battery manufacturing to meet rising EV demand.

As global automakers seek efficient, sustainable battery solutions, Coreshell’s silicon-based technology could play a key role in advancing the EV market.
