Amazon Rolls Out Custom-Fit Packaging to Boost Sustainability in Europe

Amazon is revolutionizing its European operations with a major investment in automated packaging machines that create custom-fit cardboard boxes and paper bags. Announced on May 7, 2025, this initiative aims to slash waste, cut emissions, and enhance sustainability across the company’s fulfillment network. With over 70 machines set to be installed in Germany, the UK, France, Italy, and Spain by year-end, Amazon is doubling down on its eco-friendly packaging goals.

Tailored Packaging, Less Waste

The new machines use advanced sensors to measure each item’s dimensions, producing right-sized cardboard boxes or paper bags on demand. This eliminates excess material, with paper bags up to 90% lighter than comparable cardboard boxes and saving an average of 26 grams of packaging per shipment. A high-speed Universal Robotic Labeller also applies labels up to 75% smaller, even on irregularly shaped items, further reducing waste.

“We’re using machine learning and automation to create packaging that’s made to fit,” said Pat Lindner, Amazon’s VP of Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging. “It protects products while cutting unnecessary materials.”

Emissions Down, Efficiency Up

By optimizing packaging size, Amazon maximizes vehicle space, enabling more deliveries per trip and reducing carbon emissions. This aligns with the company’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040. Since 2015, Amazon has cut per-shipment packaging weight by 43%, avoiding over 3 million metric tons of materials—equivalent to 900 Big Ben towers. The lightweight, recyclable paper bags, made with heat-sealing technology and no glue, further lower the carbon footprint of manufacturing and transport.

Building on a Sustainable Legacy

Amazon’s latest move builds on its 2023 milestone of 100% recyclable delivery packaging in Europe, covering all boxes, bags, and envelopes for Amazon and third-party Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) sellers. Over half of European shipments now use reduced packaging, like paper bags or cardboard envelopes, or none at all via the Ships in Product Packaging program, which has skipped added packaging for over 1 billion shipments since 2019.

A Growing Network of Innovation

Amazon plans to deploy hundreds of these machines across Europe, with 18 already slated for UK centers in Durham, Sutton Coldfield, and Tilbury. By 2027, the network will expand further. The technology, tested in Germany and the UK, reimagines machines once used for plastic bags, now retrofitted for durable, weather-resistant paper. This follows Amazon’s 2022 phase-out of single-use plastic delivery bags in Europe, replaced with recyclable paper alternatives.

Why It Matters?

The fashion and e-commerce industries face growing scrutiny over waste, with 61% of consumers in a 2024 Simon-Kucher study prioritizing recyclable, biodegradable packaging. Amazon’s custom-fit packaging not only meets this demand but also sets a benchmark for scalable sustainability. By reducing material use and optimizing logistics, the initiative supports a circular economy while maintaining product safety.

“This is a significant step forward for our European customers and the planet,” Lindner said.

What’s Next for Amazon?

With consumer demand for eco-friendly solutions soaring—83% are willing to pay more, per a 2024 PwC survey—Amazon’s investment signals a broader industry shift. The company is also exploring reusable packaging trials with startups like Hipli and Re-Zip, testing 100,000 orders in Europe. As Amazon scales its automated packaging network, it could reshape e-commerce logistics, proving sustainability and efficiency can go hand in hand.
